So, as I've stated in The Replacements, I have a editor and sorta-co-author by the name of Cthuluigi. He's right now only posting stuff from writing challenges, but hopefully he'll start actually getting his ass moving and do some lenghty stories. Anyway, yea, go follow him.

I personally think that MLD is overhyped. It's good, but it's not the best.
Okay, I'll give it props for being probably the most emotional fic, but it isn't the best.

"On a Cross and Arrow", "Eternal" (or what I read of it), "Sunny Skies All Day Long", etc, etc. I re-read MLD and comparing it to other fics... it's okay. Just okay.
Let me elaborate. While MLD is an emotional rollercoaster that plays with our feelings of parenting, it... isn't the Dashie we all know and love. It hurts me to say that, but I can't get quite attached to that Dashie as compared to, say, OaCaA. OaCaA keeps Dashie intact, thereby having the Dashie we all know and love.
I'm not saying MLD is an average story; it isn't! It's truly deserving of it's spot as the most well know of the Four. But compared to others... Eh.

Nope, it's the best. And by that I don't mean it's superior in craft or more original in concept than any other story. I mean it's the staple fan fic for the brony fandom. It's the best and there's nothing you or I or anyone can do about it.

I agree with Kami on this, but that sense of overhypeness (is that a word? It is now...) has put it as the fic to read in our fandom. It is a very emotional story, but i don't believe it's the best fanfic out there. But i also don't mean it sucks or it's bad in anyway. It's amazingly good. There's just some that are better.

Past Sins was absolutely amazing. Great storyline. Long chapters. Well written. Very good story in all. Not enough Twilight and Nyx "Mother-Daughter" moments though. It was very good, but no where near as sad as MLD.

If I may expand upon that point, good sir. MLD Dashie is not supposed to be the Dashie we all know and love. Essentially, she's a different version of what we already know. Granted, her template is similiar, but she's never supposed to be like the original Dashie.
Why is this? The regular Dash we "know and love" lived in Equestria, was brought up by ponies, and had her own childhood and life experiences in that natural enviroment. Meanwhile, Dashie (Or Earth Dash, if you prefer) lived on Earth, was raised by a single human dad, and she had her own childhood and life experiences in that foreign enviroment. The end result is two completely different Rainbow Dash'. The reason why she isn't faithful to her common representation is because, by nature, she isn't supposed to be.
So they are, in fact, two distinctly different versions of the same pony. One is normal, one is obviously AU.
(Now, how you can tell how different they really are is beyond me. ROB did not really focus on the intricacies of Dashie's personality and quirks in this new enviroment. However, I'm not going to hold that against him, he's already figured out how to take care of that...whether he knows it or not.)

That may have been what sealed the deal for me, in this case. I honestly love seeing the personality quirks of the characters; for me, it's one of the Three Necessities along with Plot and Grammar. Since what they did was basically left to our imagination, I couldn't quite get into it as well as I would've loved.
539074 And that is the biggest disapointment in any "Pony-on-my-doorstep" story. They always focus on the human, never the pony.* (No offense to ROB or any other author who writes stories in this sub-genre, of course.) That's also one of the reasons why MLD falls short of "Best fic on site" status. I agree that it is a great fic, but not the greatest.
But then you have to ask "What and who can really define greatness?" and then we bring philosophical crap into it and over-complicate things. Everyone has their own opinions and we can never have a uninamous answer.
So Is it good? Yes. Is it over-rated? Most probably, but that's not due to ROB or the story. Should you read it anyway? Yes, because if you want to get involved in Pony fanfiction this is essentially towards the top of your "Must read" list. It is a staple now and it serves as a point of comparison for many other fics that have been written. That's all I really got to say, really.
*But I do believe there is a reason ROB has not gone back and reworked it.

Does it have a good Plot?
Does it have good Grammar?
Are the characters Interesting?
Then of course, comes the question
Will it hold my interest
