Something occurred, like FULLY occurred to me over the week, specially Wednesday morning (1:45am) as i was brushing my teeth before heading for bed.
See, along with Vámonos, Equestrian Exploradora... I Want Outta This!, another recent fic I started (and have for some time been trying to figure out how to continue without just making it a fix fic to the point i run into a wall) is Equestria's New River Spirit where, Wedsnday morning, i realized I have a huge advantage with that and ANY other fics i'm writing or yet to start writing set BEFORE Equestria Girls.
Know what that is?
Think about the problem everyone always encounters when they get to haivng to write those events, be it from an OC's perspective or and Self Insert by either just Self Insert or Displaced. they always have to worry about making sure Twilgiht gets the crown and gets back through the portal before it closes.
however, having foreknowledge of Spring Breakdown means something that is KEY important. You're not actually bound by the three day time limit from the movie.
That means, you (in this case ME with Haku) don't have to keep things going perfectly as possible. you can literally have your character assure Twilight (and the rest of the princesses and mane 6 before heading through the portal) that there is no time limit. they can take their time.
the best part about that? Sunset has NO CLUE about the other portal. she too is under the impression it's a three day time window. So, imagine how fun it will be to write Sunset losing her mind when she notices Princess Twilight isn't worried about being cut off from Equestria.
Imagine the confusion and frustration going through her mind, not able to comprehend why Twilight isn't trying to rush everything to get back in time before the portal closes. this also would allow writers to flesh out the Equestria Girls world out more, allow easier time to make Twilight's getting the school to come to harmony again feel more natural instead of "hey, here's a single song, now we're all back to normal, with any animosity completely forgotten".
It would also leave Sunset with no means of getting the crown, since Principal Celestia had Vice Principal Luna secure it far better after Human Fluttershy found it on the lawn by the statue after Sunset chuck it through the portal, meaning she'd be facing more difficulties, all the while, Twilight's naturally friendly charm takes more and more of Sunset's power over the school away from her, til Sunset is in a similar position as during Rainbow Rocks until the Sirens arrived, only this time she wouldn't have the humane 6 to help her, which could lead her to learn from her mistakes naturally.
Seriously, for any self aware character or OC yet to go into Equestria Girls' events, Spring Breakdown is a HUGE lifesaver. the write can easily, if it's a self aware character, have seen the special before getting to Equestria. for OCs, they can have stumbled upon the portal at some point and mention it during Equestria Girls' events before going through the mirror portal.
I am so glad i realized this sooner, rather than later. this will make things so much easier and so much more fun for future stories and current stories yet to reach that point.
Pretty clever never thought of that before. Although to be fair the other portal is on a deserted island out in the middle of the ocean at an unspecified location. Even knowing that it exists it's not exactly a viable option for most people even if you do somehow know where the island is.

I watched that once. I don't have photogenic memory and I'm a HiE guy within Twilight's body and for some stupid anal reason the rest of the events leading up to me and Sunset plays out as normal to allow such...
Was the cruise a normal route? I don't know. Did they follow that route religiously? I don't know. How am I going to get my hot scrawny teenaged ass over there? I don't know.
I suppose I could wait for the cruise... oh... it's after the school of friendship. So... it stands to figure the portal would simply open again (maybe) in three years first. Ya know... before the cruise even happens. Equestria will be a disaster zone by then. Can ponies live without their magic? Tirek's victims seem to lie where they fell.
I've been homeless with just the clothes on my back once before. I won't do it again without preparation and i doubt Celestia will let me through the portal with several saddlebags of camping supplies (she might think I'm going to fail on purpose). I don't think I'm going to manage as Sunset did; I'll likely be some used up ho dying in a gutter by the seaside with a magic crown.

We're mostly pointing out that the location of the portal kind of offsets the convenience of it not having a time limit. Finding it isn't an issue, just find it on the Equestria side, but then you still have the problem of it being located on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean.
Making use of it is doable but it would take some prep work.

Your assuming that the portal was in existence before the crown (and first movie). Or that the crown made it. If it did how long did it take to form and stabilize? So many unknowns.

Before the movie celestia had the mirror before she sent it to the Crystal empire plus star swirl created alot of things so the mirror could be one of them

that was only the cruise the Humane 7 went on. cruises aren't a one time thing. that cruise was very likely already a thing years before Sunset first went to the EQG world, Spring Breakdown was just us seeing the time Sunset and the others were on it.
So, doesn't matter that Spring Breakdown takes place AFTER the school of friendship becomes a thing. what matters is the cruise will always be an option.

simply take the cruise and keep an eye out for it. Cruises happen all the time (unless you're currently living here, in our world), so all that's really needed is to get on one, keep an eye out for the island (the self aware character could've memorized something from the special and the in universe character could've just spent time making sure to memorize the island prior), wait for the island to be in range, then find a way to abandon ship without anyone noticing and swim.
then just jump in the portal and boom, problem solved

Still, a real crapshoot unless there is literally only one ship that takes that route and it only ever takes that one route with zero deviations (I know nothing about how cruise ships usually operate). Not to mention they only found the island thanks to a literal beacon of lightning shooting up into the sky after the ship broke down nearby.
Under normal circumstances maybe the ship never gets within visual range of the island.
You know as authors we can handwave anything. Perform the mighty "ass pull" on accident or on purpose. An ignorant man will buy that crap without thought. A man educated on the matter will see it for what it is. This has nothing to do with intelligence (though a smart man is hard to fool as they are learning while you are pulling). Can they still enjoy the fic/movie/game? Yep. This is part of the territory of "suspension of disbelief" and this idea can be easily broken if you don't establish your character as being smart enough to pull this off.
I stand by my words. I was a smartass then, I'll be a smartass now. Don't take it personal because... I just want you to understand how hard your idea is.
Is that the only ship that goes on that route?
If yes; how often does the ship go on that route?
If no; what other routes does it take? Remember folks; HiE!Twilight now needs to check all those routes for the island! not just the one on the movie.
Is the island on a map? Probably yes. There are natural methods for islands to form in a short period of time and given the size and vegetation likely predates satellites.
Is the portal even there?
If not; can it be formed with the crown?
What other problems will be caused by having the crown on the human side of the portal?
And we haven't even covered Equestria yet. I have. Unless you read my blog then it is 'we'. If it takes more than a month to get back she will come back to an apocalypse emerging with total meltdown of pony society not far behind.
