PSA/WARNING: DO NOT install CLIPGRAB!!! It is a VIRUS!!!!!! · 10:44pm May 26th, 2020

I wish somepony would've warned me before I downloaded it. :pinkiegasp:

I'm typing this from my phone because my computer browser is totally screwed up.

Just minutes after posting the latest chapter to My Sister Cozy Glow today, my browser suddenly blacked out. When I reopened it, Google Chrome defaulted to Yahoo search page. I tried to change it in the settings, but it still went straight to Yahoo. And ads were popping everywhere. The same is true for Microsoft Edge.

The culprit is ClipGrab, which I had downloaded a week ago to help me make some pony video edits. The ClipGrab software by itself is free and works like a charm, but it also comes with a shit ton of malware hiding inside the initial download.

I'm currently trying to remove the malware, but it seems the browser settings have still been compromised, even after ClipGrab (and the malware) has been removed.

Hopefully it'll be fixed. If any of y'all have had the same problem, any tips would be 20% awesome. :rainbowdetermined2:

Also if anyone can recommend me a good YouTube downloader that doesn't download viruses... that'd be great too. :twilightsheepish:

Or, you can also call me a stupid dumbass for not realizing earlier that this was malware...:derpytongue2:

In conclusion,

DO NOT INSTALL CLIPGRAB IT IS MALWARE IN DISGUISE!!!

UPDATE: I used some malware cleaning programs and changed some browser settings, and that's gotten rid of the problem for now. :twilightoops:

Uhh if you'd like I can reccomend a way to test and analyze stuff in a simulated environment before you completely commit to it. Sandboxie it allows you to have a simulation of it downloaded and test stuff before it can get put of hand and such.

Maybe muda uploaded a video on it? SomeOrdinaryGamers is his yt

If you're not afraid of a little command line action, I recommend youtube-dl. It's a simple, fast, open source tool. Most of the time all you have to do is run "youtube-dl <url to video>" and you're done. It's a single exe file with no install. Supports many sites besides YouTube as well. It's updated frequently as many sites change their structure often. And there are a lot of options if you need some kind of extra processing. But if you stick to YT you probably won't need them.

You got Trojaned!

These types of virus usually reconfigure the browser to use a local proxy, run by the virus itself, where it injects ads and more malware. Once you're sure you've removed the malware, look in the browser's settings for something labeled "proxy" or "network". Change it to the default settings, if you can find them. If none is labeled default, look for a setting like "No Proxy" or "Connect directly to the Internet".

The malware has to be fully removed first. If it isn't, it will just keep changing the proxy configuration.

Be aware that once a computer has a malware infection, it could have additional malware infections that aren't as obvious, and lay dormant until one day the user is presented with a ransomware demand. The only way to be completely sure is to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

Yikes...
No idea for the downloader

Use AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes to purge those viruses!

Completely irrelevant to the serious topic at hand, but I love that profile picture. I presume it was laid in the sun for a fortnight—
