The Alternate Start To A Thief's Tale · 11:23am Jan 3rd, 2020
So I've completed rewriting a good portion of the first 40 chapters of A Thief's Tale, and a lot's changed. Most of the beginning chapters are twice as long as they were previously and I nae-nae'd them bitches like you wouldn't believe. That being said; should I replace the existing text, or should I post the alt-start as a new story? Max is the same guy for the most part, but the early Mane 6 are damn near completely different. The dialogue is also a damn sight better imo, but I'd like to know:

I'd say option 1 if possible, since I don't know if you can post the second story since it's so similar to the first.
see if you can post it as a second story if its as different as you say it should be fine
I think the site has rules against reposting the same story. You're better off just keeping the original and keep reworking the existing chapters.

Yes, that's a rule, but the Alt Start is different enough for the second posting to be warranted, which is why I'm asking in the first place. There are thousands of words added to 2~4k chapters, and even then the new chapters carry a completely different tone. It's still working to the same point, but you know what they say about the branching paths and the ultimate end

Well, to start, Max himself from chapter one is less edgy, and from there on he's a lot more introspective and generally more introspective as well as observant. For example; He no longer despises Rainbow upon meeting her, but is actually low-key terrified of the flying blue 'ditch-rat'. Spends a lot more time wondering what the fuck she is, trying to assimilate, and actually isn't a complete asshole. Less changes after chapter 12 give or take, but I'm thinking about redoing the 10~20's even more to add more punch. The story itself still works to the same goal, but Max, the MC, is a different person with different motives and different reactions to the things that happen around him.
Plus I'm scratching out the last three chapters entirely. Have plans to rewrite those since I hate how the story ended and still am not satisfied with it as of right the fuck now. It's been eating my mental anus with plenty of tooth, and atm I'm doing some pretty major changes to the early forties.
Posting it as an AU equivalent or Alt viewpoint seperate means you dont lose any comments posted origionally? At least that what seems to happen with a heavily edited or pulled and reposted chapter, all that digital archeology erased.

Since you think it's different enough, I'd say post it as its own thing. Also, I'll definitely give it a read, since god knows I need some quality writing after some of the shit I've read in my effort to avoid boredom.

My vote is for you to just make a new post, but keep a back up. Worst case scenario they flag it as not different enough for a post youll have it to change the one you've already got. I like the original so id suggest keeping if you can, but i am willing to not complain if you have to change it. It is YOUR story after all.

Well, it's more like the two worlds collide at some point and things get trippy from there, and if you post the alternate to the site as a different story, you get more from it than just changing the old stuff and hoping people read it.

Both fics are a bit different from the others, I liked better the original though and I reed both of them all the way through.
A new story would be nice, you have worked pretty hard and it would be a shame that all that work has gone to waste.

Well, there's A Bard's Tale on Royal Road that has over 15 chapters in it. It's not MLP, but I don't really write 'new' stuff for the fandom anymore.
I don't give a fu... either way it will still be my fav story of all them. So do what you feel right. Cheers
