Should Auld Aquaintance Be Forgot ... · 3:09pm Dec 31st, 2018
WELP. 2018's done. Let's hear it for the inexorable march of time, folks!
But yeah. Looking back on things, 2018 was fairly chill-- at least on the personal level, as once you start looking at the grand scheme of things shit is going banannas out there which is why I probably spend too much time on here writing too much about pony. 67,452 words of pony, to be precise, over the course of eight fics-- three of which (and honestly the majority of the word count) were entries in the Flash Sentry Papers, which is ... kind of like writing original fiction? In that it's about ponies that aren't voiced by Tara Strong & Co, and also in that only like six people read them. I'm literary!
(Not really).
Of the remaining stories, three (Here Comes a New Challenger, A Matter of Provenance, and This is Not a Drill) were written for various contests-- kind of going back to my roots for short and silly fics. Likewise, Of Orchards and Obituaries was inspired by WhiteDiamonds telling me I needed to write more Rarijack stories when we crossed paths at Everfree Northwest.
And I wrote GARGANTULON VS. THE SPACE DRACULAS because "Gargantulon" is entirely too fun to say.
But yeah, I went to EFNW. Definitely A Step there, in doing pony things out where people can see them (GASP). It was fairly low key, but still fun. Enough to make me curious about THE LAST BRONYCON(tm) in 2019, so that's something to look forward to, I suppose. Especially if PresentPerfect or somebody can put me on one of the fanfic panels, so I can pontificate on comedy and/or shipping and/or why my headcanon is the superior canon.
EHehm.
So yeah. There's at least one thing I'm looking forward to in 2019! (Provided I get my act together and start making reservations). As for resolutions, I'm going to go for my typical 'write more original stuff!' which ... well, considering I wrote nearly 70k of random pony stuff when I felt like it, I could/should theoretically be able to hammer out even more when I actually apply myself to it. Which, uh, may last all of three weeks until I go back to writing fanfic, but we'll see. I've signed up for a couple of online writing courses (on genre fiction, no less!) and I've realized one of my big stumbling blocks in original work-- that is, a matter of scale. I'm good at writing snappy dialogue, but it's hard to bridge that snappiness to something that necessarily requires a larger scale (like, say, giant robots).
I've got some other, non-pony stuff to look forward to as well in the coming year-- which I won't bore you with. Some various RPG stuff I'll be playing 'cause I'm a nerd, for the most part. Might go on another big road trip as well, depending on how much vacation I wind up having left (and depending on what my wallet looks like) after BronyCon.
So, well, we'll have to see how things go! Hope the rest of you have an even better 2019!
May 2019 treat you better than 2018, Tumbleweed. Been enjoyable reading your stuff.
As one of the five people reading the Flash Sentry Papers, it's been a blast so far.
Also: Yay, Time!
The Flash Sentry Papers are excellent, don't know what you're talking about. As someone else just said to me, may we all stop living in such interesting times soon.
Happy new year, everypony! I really need to catch up with FSP, but what I've read so far has been a ton of fun.
Happy New Year and best of luck with the resolutions!
