    An Update

So this blog was a long time coming.  It’s been, uh, quite a while since I posted here, and I’ve also been somewhere between glacial and snailish on getting new stories out.  What have I even done this year? Three or four? And a couple were just a thousand words. One was even a poem, and I’m not even sure that counts.

An Update · 1:11am Dec 11th, 2018

So this blog was a long time coming.  It’s been, uh, quite a while since I posted here, and I’ve also been somewhere between glacial and snailish on getting new stories out.  What have I even done this year? Three or four? And a couple were just a thousand words. One was even a poem, and I’m not even sure that counts.

So I’m going to state the obvious here and announce that I’ve put a hold on pony writing.  I have a couple hundred spare words on an assortment of stories, and there have been weeks in which my entire production has been... one sentence.  I just can’t push past that block. On pony stuff, at least.

I’ve decided to try my hand at original fiction.  I have an idea for a fantasy novel, and I’ve churned out a few thousand words of worldbuilding and backstory this last week alone, far faster than I’ve done for pony in some time.  My fire hasn’t burned out, it’s just burning a bit differently these days.

To be transparent, it’s not entirely original fiction.  I’m taking one of my old stories here and adapting it for a more general audience.  I’ve learned a few things in the years since I’ve published it, so this might be closer to a ground-up rewrite to work in new plot points, different lore and celestial objects that don’t move on individuals’ whims.  Whatever it takes to make sure I don’t have to cut Hasbro a check someday.

I’m ready to take this step.  Ponyfic has been kind to me--you have all been kind to me by reading my drivel and encouraging me with how you’ve enjoyed it over the years--and I want to see what I can do with my skills now.  I feel like I’ve earned these skills. I’ve had the top ranked story on the site three times, been featured in the Royal Guard, interviewed by the RCL, and spotlights on Equestria Daily. Hell, one story ended up doing three of those things all by its lonesome.

Please excuse me while I give everyone who has ever said that critical success and mainstream popularity are mutually exclusive a big, hearty FUCK Y'ALL!

Sorry.  But if you don’t toot your own horn every now and then, who else will?

Anyway, that’s what I have for you right now: a big bowl of unfortunate nothing.  I won’t exactly be leaving the site though. There are a few stories that I’m lined up to help edit, and there’s always the chance this announcement will jinx my muse into switching back to pony.  Cracking out another thousand words for a oneshot may not seem so daunting when I’m knee deep on the climb towards 100k or so. And I’ll be sure to stop by and beg for a few sales let you all know when everything is ready to go.

Until then, I need an actual book to sell before I think about selling it.  This isn’t goodbye, just a see-you-later.

Pony on, folks.  Pony on.

Good luck, dude! If you'd like a pre-reader for your new stuff, I'd be happy to help. I've thought about repurposing some of my own stuff here into original fiction, but I just haven't been able to do it just yet, so I'm thrilled to see somebody else giving it a shot!

Good luck! I look forward to seeing and reading your other works, too, as I've enjoyed your pony stories very much.

Hope to see you back soon!

Best of luck with the mostly original work.

Congrats on graduating to self-publishing! You’ve more than put in enough time and effort here.

Or as they say on the gaming world: Welcome to the next level.

I really, really look forward to seeing this come to fruition. I'll be happy to do as ever and be a bouncy wall, or a bouncy ball, or both.

I certainly hear you on the block. Glad you're finding at least some routes around it. Keep us posted!

My favorite type of hiatus blog! Can't wait to see what you cook up!
