New Equestria Girls Shorts: The Beach, Girls in Bikinis, and LOTS OF CRABS! (Minor Spoilers) · 4:36pm Mar 11th, 2018
So a new batch of shorts related to the recent special are available on the Discovery Family Go app. Here are my thoughts.
"Too Hot to Handle": Crab Adopt-a-thon? Really? Crabs are for eating, not for pets! Anyway, this one saw the return of Pinkie Pie's crab getup from the babysitting short, and past that was basically two minutes of Pinkie being cute, silly, and barefoot. Also, Rarity versus crabs meme referenced.
"Unsolved Selfie Mysteries": Sunset gets super excited at the possibility of a sea monster when something mysterious and sea monstery shows up in the background of a selfie she took with Fluttershy, Pinkie, and Twilight. The girls investigate, and it turns out to be Pinkie's lost floatie coveed in seaweed and gunk.
"Lost and Found": Rarity loses an earring while putting on her sunscreen. Notable for her overdramatic utterance of the word "naked"--you can just TELL Tabitha's been waiting for an excuse to do that. She recruits Rainbow and AJ to help her find it using a couple of metal detectors. They spend the entire day beachcombing and amass a huge pile of unearthed stuff, but no earring. Rarity apologizes for wasting their entire day, but it turns out Rainbow and Applejack had way more fun searching for buried treasure than they were having chillaxing. The punchline? The earring was in her hair the entire time.
"Aww, Baby Turtles": The girls and Tank help some hatchling sea turtles find a path to the water by clearing some "dangerous obstacles". Rarity versus crab meme referenced AGAIN, and a toy version of Applejack's boat from "P.P.O.V." shows up.
"X Marks the Spot": Sunset Shimmer finds a treasure map in a bottle. She, Pinkie, and Twilight go on a mini adventure which leads to a sushi truck parked on the beachside. It turns out the treasure map was a clever bit of marketing.
So these are fun and silly and full of G-rated but still very eye-appealing fanservice. And crabs. Lots and lots of crabs. Like, a ridiculous number of crabs.
Heh, I've only watched lost and found and X marks the spot, but I liked them both XD
The crab with the knife was a ridiculously funny visual, clearly you don't get between a crab and it's meal.
Yeah, not sure whose dog got killed by crabs, but someone at DHX really has an obsession with the things. There were even some in the cute video-gamey bit in "X Marks the Spot."

Well, given some of what Zef and I have caught to date? It's insanely plausible one or more animators have read "Sunset Shimmer Has Crabs!" and/or "Canterlot Cooking Calamity" and decided to throw in a random bunch of crusty crabs. There's no QUESTION the animators have gotten into the fanfics, we've seen way too much fandom crap turning up as gags since around season 4. (Earliest possible direct reference to MY fics turned up in season five.)
These were all really fun beach episodes. I noticed that Timber (finally) wasn’t portrayed in a good light in this appearance and Twilightnseemed annoyed/angered at him for using her as a human shield. I’m just surprised these came out so close to YouTube putting up the videos for Forgotten Friendship.

... See, I know with characters like Pinkie and Discord around and the faces even more down to earth characters make this is a somewhat redundant statement, but the memes that come out of this show are WEIRD.

Twilight's Athena costume in "Scare Master" (Persona EG), human Zephyr Breeze being a skeevy douchebag (I codified that), a joke about Trixie being vain about her mane in "All Bottled Up" (Trixie and Spike Go Down the Hoooooole), and there've been other things I can't think of off the top of my head. Then there's all the stuff that references other writers and artists, mostly in re: Lyra and Bon Bon, Time Turner, Derpy (Derpy and Time Turner interacting the way they did in "Slice of Life" was PURELY fanfiction driven). Wallflower Blush is SS&E's "Background Pony" Lyra with the serial numbers filed off.
Also, this may be my imagination? But it seems like every time I make my EG Fluttershy a little bitchier, canon EG Fluttershy gets a little bitchier. One of the "Better Together" shorts outright had her making a "Fuck it, I can't EVEN" face at her brother's antics.
That's what's awesome about the animators at DHX: they LOVE adding fandom nods, and we love catching those nods.

These were all rather fun and enjoyable. Probably my favorites were Lost and Found, X Marks the Spot, and Aww Baby Turtles. (Because - baby turtles! XD)
