    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    Ping

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

NaNoWriMo week 2.5: Rarity gets naked in a box · 2:11pm Nov 20th, 2017

Guys I’m insanely behind on everything that isn’t To Serve In Hell at this point (PMs/feed/Writeoff/Flashfic/etc), but that at least is still flowing at a good rate. I’m definitely on-target to write 50,000 words of it this month. I’m less sure if that’ll be the true “end” but it should be close. Thanksgiving is going to be the monkey wrench it always is, but I feel like I’m over the hump and the homestretch is in sight.

Go Speed Racer!

I structured the remaining story into 4 sub-arcs prior to November; 1 for each of our leading ladies, and one for the section when their paths all reconnect at the end. I’m hoping to complete Rarity’s (which is by far the single longest and unmistakably “main” arc) tonight, and that feels amazing after sinking almost 2 years into this thing. I’ve also got a few chapters done on Sassy’s, and I’m pleased that it finally feels like I’ve found a way of writing her that lets her stay prickly without being excessively so. Probably my main focus after getting Rarity’s arc done will be to move on to the finale arc, with the goal of actually writing “the end” during the month. If there’s time to go back and finish up Sassy’s arc, so much the better. Sadly that leaves Rainbow Dash as the big loser of the month; her arc will almost certainly have to wait until after November. But in a lot of ways she’s the one I’m least worried about, which is a big part of why I started with everything else; she’ll get a lot of action and movement and drama, but nothing like the kind of knife-edge tension that Rarity has to navigate.

In complete contrast to said tension, I wanted to share (for the heck of it) that I just wrote a chapter last night that can mostly be described as: “Rarity lets somepony shut her in a box and then takes her clothes off.” :rainbowhuh: It was one of those moments where I had to stop and laugh because I hadn’t expected for that to happen, yet it made sense in context, yet it lends itself to a ridiculous description. Huzzah, the trifecta of dubious greatness! :raritywink: But in all seriousness, it struck me that there could be a certain poignancy to having Rarity reach a point where she felt like what she was doing was truly working for the betterment of the world at large instead of just being the best she could do under the circumstances, and that using the visual/physical transition away from her Nightmare World uniform & hairstyle would be a strong way to help signify her inner change.

I ‘unno, seemed cool at the time. Place your bets now if it’ll get cut during editing! :rainbowwild:

So what’s new out there with you guys?

Fabulous, Darling, fabulous!

Yeeeeeeessssss :raritystarry:

The sad thing is that I still need to see the entire second half of S7, as timing of kids activities skunked my chances to catch the original broadcasts. But it's coming to Netflix eventually, thank goodness.

That is the saddest story in the universe. Not that you should go punk Rarity, but it would definitely be a “fight the powah!” Rarity.

Maybe she can get her mane shredded during the finale. It could be another example of the external/physical changing to mimic the internal. :duck:

Totally shredded, like Bulk Biceps shredded.
