State of the Writer, April 2024!

    It's another boring one! I ain't wrote nothin'! :B

It actually feels lately like I've been crawling out of a pit? So maybe there's a light ahead? But it's also blocked by Balatro lol somepony save me D:

The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

More friggin' EQG shorts · 7:20pm Nov 5th, 2017

Argh, I had things to do today! Thanks to FOME for the heads-up on this. What I wanna know is, these are on the Discovery Family website. Where should I be paying attention to stay on top of these?

I may be fucked real fast. <.<

The Finals Countdown

DUNANAAANAH
DUNA-NA-NA-NA

How the fuck many people aren't gonna get that reference in the title? At least it's not as bad as Hooffields and McColts. <.< I found this one dull! It's just a training, or should I say, studying montage music video. And unlike previous music videos, it has a speaking part before the music begins, and it sucks. :B I mean, it's basically just Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3, but like, I've already seen that episode? And the only thing I liked about it was the TwiDash fuel? Which there is none of here. This doesn't do anything with the premise other than extend it to all of Twilight's friends, which makes them all look like idiot-savants. >.> And Rainbow Dash definitely needs a fidget spinner. Foof.

Overpowered

Huh. So this is like, a single idea presented in two-minute visual format, and I gotta say, I'm glad they kept it low-key. The girls' superpowers are going haywire, and... well, I mean, this is basically just that plus an explanation for it. But it's interesting. And Sunset has cool headphones.

Okay but let's talk about Zephyr Breeze I never wanted to see him again, but I kind of don't hate this cameo? Like, he's his old, smarmy self, hitting on "Rainbows" Dash as usual, but his "I don't care anyway" as he walks away is hilarious, as is Fluttershy being completely mortified. XD I suspect this is just meant to lay building blocks for something ahead -- even if it's just explaining why they aren't using their powers all the time -- but it's just a little more fun than you might otherwise think.

Star Crossed

Hey, Star Swirl existed in the human world! Which is weird, considering he sent the Sirens there, at the very least. Also, Fluttershy keeps bugs in jars and hands them out to people for no good reason. Good thing nothing else happened in this one!

Rainbow Dash definitely needs a fidget spinner.

She might be too busy dabbing to keep the spinner spinning, though. That's what the cool kids do these days.

I think the best part of Finals Countdown was how not worried Sunset is, she’s got this. She’s not freaking out in class, she gets the right answer during the first study group, and her “down time” is to beat Twilight at chess. (At least that’s how the animators play it off; one of Twi’s pawns blocking her king is a bishop and she can use that to block the checkmate.)

For the record, I just keep an eye on Derpibooru for screencaps.

And there's definitely a story to be had with "Overpowered." We've seen what magic abuse does to people in the human world. The girls may have an early warning system in that regard, but that doesn't guarantee that they'll heed it.

Finals Countdown did at least have Sunset look good in terms of already being confident and stuff. But the whole premise behind it (most of them not being good students on their own, I guess? but can trick themselves into being among the best). Yeah, basically expanding on Testing Testing, but with less focus, less necessity (in terms of them needing it for the test), and less underlying motivation for most of them (RD badly needed to pass the Wonderbolts test, it's not exactly crucial for all of them to get A's in high school for any intrinsic reason). But busybody Twilight is often fun.

Overpowered... It's a thing. FS was good.

Star Crossed: I'll admit, I thought it would be hilarious if what Fluttershy had handed Twilight had been a condom. :V

I think the best part of Finals Countdown was how not worried Sunset is, she’s got this.

Interesting, because that's really the thing I don't like. Sunset has morphed over four movies to be a flawless (and therefore, dull) character, and her ability to keep up with the party member entirely defined as the brainiac makes one or the other feel redundant.

Good thing nothing else happened in this one!

Let me taste your tears, Sunlight shippers. Your salty, salty tears of pain.

But in all seriousness, these all could have been good... ya know, episodes.:applejackunsure: That they crammed the substantial worldbuilding of Overpowered into the space of a pop song tells me not to expect much from the creative effort being put into EQG.

But it makes sense. She's the Twilight before Twilight, and a grown ass adult going through high school.

The chess scene is solid SciSet ship fuel. :D

How the fuck many people aren't gonna get that reference in the title?

I got it. Do I win anything? :pinkiehappy:

Hey, Star Swirl existed in the human world!

Considering how the comics showed him crossing dimensions, I wouldn't be surprised if he stopped by the human world at some point and showed up those stuck up 14th - 15th century astronomers.

But of course, Alby already did it. :moustache:

I would say she's flawless yet. She still has a bit of a temper, worries overly for the future, can seem disorganized sometimes.

People keep expecting things to "happen" in Equestria Girls. But the only things that can happen are either high school drama, which is boring, or magical things, which makes EQG literally just MLP again but >no hooves.

It's still a waste of a concept either way.
