Yeah; I'm expecting for Stygian to turn out to be the Sunburst to Star Swirl's Twilight Sparkle - A brilliant scholar but without spectacular power to back that up. Maybe the Alicorn Ascension spell was something that Star Swirl and Stygian were working on together and, when Star Swirl ran into the road-block of not understanding the Magic of Friendship, he gave up. Stygian wasn't about to give up and went down an ill-advised path to try to circumvent the spell's failure.
