Attention writers: Check to see if you're being "mirrored" on Fanfiction.net · 6:11am Oct 26th, 2017

PSA: A friend of mine discovered one of his stories was posted without his authorization on FF.net. This incident, at least, wasn't plagiarism per se--the guy attributed the story to its true author, but still posted it without consent, under the pretense that he assumed it was okay to do so.

Where there's one idiot like this, you can bet there's more. Especially on a site that's about 98% idiot.

So might wanna run a search to see if you're being mirrored without consent.

*sigh* I had stuff to do tomorrow...

How do I do that?

Best way is to search key phrases from your story that would most lilely exist only there, then see if it's only fimfiction that pops up

The only way to do it is to search for every story you've ever published (here) by title on FF.net. Which is a massive pain in the ass. 😕

Well, several of them are actually already on fanfiction on my account...

Well obviously not those. You need to look for the ones that aren't supposed to be there.

as long as they're citeing me I don't care. free advertisement is free

Are you more upset about the unauthorized mirroring, or it appearing under another username? Because there's several automated mirrors of FiMFic up and running, and you'll be mirrored there too (deleted stories included), just under the correct name.

Both of these things are unacceptable when permission has not been given. And we're not talking about automated server mirrors here, we're talking about FF.net users taking it upon themselves to repost other people's work on FF.net because "it isn't there yet".

If someone copies my stories, then they are doing me a favor. Especially if they continue it. I can’t write for SHIT!

I'd hate to see that happen; some jerk stole one of my stories a couple years ago.

I've had people threaten to steal my story on this site! And people supported the ****! Eh, I might check, I might not.

For what it’s worth, when conducting a search on Duck Duck Go, inspired by this post, I used “site:fanfiction.net” as one of the search terms. The “site:” (with no space after) specifier tells the search engine to limit its search to just the named domain. For other search terms I used distinctive strings such as titles or OC names.
