Uncommon Bond S7E24 Review · 5:06pm Oct 8th, 2017
And now time to end the season.
So first, the opener made me scrunch my face. Starlight is excited to see Sunburst, naturally. She says they’ve known each other for years, um, not really. They have so much in common, like what? She doesn’t think there’s another pony out there who she has as much in common with. Somewhere in the wilderness Trixie suddenly feels sad and doesn’t know why. I know what they’re doing but they’re laying it on thick here.
Can we just say Trixie has moved to Ponyville at this point? I’ll buy the season premiere because it was a ceremony and she was in town for a few days for it, but Trixie is here now with no given reason and even Starlight is surprised to see her.
So this is a nice introspective slice-of-life episode. I appreciate the time they take to examine what actually makes friendships work. I have friends online I’ve known since high school, and it can be tough recognizing I’ve grown apart from them - they no longer share the same interests as me, and conversely chat with other people passionately about stuff I know nothing about. But friendship is more than just “someone you know and share interests with.” As Maud says about her friendship with Starlight, they’re just comfortable around each other.
The only part of the episode that didn’t gel for me was Sunburst. He kept blowing Starlight off to hang out with her friends in the middle of activities she had planned, he was was oblivious to her feelings. Guy was kinda acting like a dick is all. But I do appreciate the big gesture at the end and that the third act focused on his side of things as he realized what had happened to their friendship and took steps to repair it.
And now with Sunburst becoming friends with Trixie and Maud and those two meeting, the Starlight Six is all but canon (Sunburst is unpictured, he’s the Spike of the group).
I'm pretty sure Trixie is still a traveling performer but I'm willing to accept she hangs around Ponyville more often between shows because that's where Starlight lives.
Trixie showing up was actually a surprise to me. I thought the (original) mane six would spotlight, but I ain't complaining!
Heh, that group is awfully blue and purple toned. Need Sunburst in there to splash in some color.
As someone who's had friends grow apart from them due to time apart I related to Starlight a lot this episode and the part when she tried to recreate their childhood was adorable and heartbreaking because as a kid or even as a teenager when trying to reconnect with an old friend sometimes it would be nice to go back in time and relive all the fun times again as they once were.
I loved Sunbursts solution of aging up the game for them to play because it feeds into how I kinda handled that. When I was younger my friends and I used to have a sleepover every other weekend and we would play with our power ranger toys and watch cartoons. Nowadays I don't see those friends anymore and when I made new friends I tried to recreate some of those memories but in a different aged up way. Instead of toys we played Yugioh or video games and instead of cartoons we watched anime. This is why I like Starlight so much; for episodes and moments like these where I can relate to her.
Overall I give this episode a solid 8. Starlight is still my favorite new character in the mlp verse and I'm glad they've been expanding on her as a character. Hell its an episode like this that makes you realize that her choice to become a cutie mark stealing tyrant was really more or less because she really missed her best and only friend which while... Unorthodox is still understandable
Considering the finale and Sunburst's role in it, I'd say he's far more likely than Trixie to occupy a main role in the Starlight six.
