Review #115 - Bubble Blossoms · 12:59am Sep 26th, 2017

So, I guess it's time to start doing these again, right? Now, I know you're all cheering, but please, save your applause until the end.

Time to dive in then:

Bubble Blossoms by Mocha Star
I was a pony, a fisher, a member of a village, and father. Then I found a flower that I had no idea would change our lives forever.

When I shared the lily with the town during the feast, it was meant as an act of kindness. The lily had another plan, it seemed.

Review
You know, I'm not really sure why I chose this one today. Probably because of episode and author bias. I think, then, I shall dive right into what I liked about it. First off, is the Old English-style writing. It adds a level of despair and age that would otherwise not have been. Combine that with the second paragraph, and you realize just how filtered the perception of time is. It's sad, really. All the characters, put together, have very little reading time to flesh out. But Mocha does this very well. The son is a philosophical genius, for instance, and while we learn this through two sentences of exposition, it blends very well. The main character is, naturally, the narrator. And I just realized Meadowbrook likes him in this fic. Who wouldn't, though? But I'll leave you to find out why. My favorite part of this story, I think, is the ending. It's so... incredible. It's like a depressing, horrific, brain-washed ending. And I love it.

As for the greatest weakness, it feels like it needs a bit more depth, more Vertical Storytelling, if you will. It's got enough to get by on, but I would certainly like more.

Recommendation: Recommended. (Honestly, this is worth it. It's a true work of genius, especially since it only took one hour to write. And while more depth would be nice, it doesn't really need it).

You're too kind.
I really appreciate the review. It's made me wanna do a few one shots.

😳
Honestly, though. I have to re-read the story cuz I wrote it and published it, usually takes me a couple days to get back to it to see what I wrote.

*spews coffee* one hour for something rated this good? I haven't read it yet but i'm already jealous and a little inspired...

And in the distance, the Ponyville Golden Oak library sits in the moonlight, lamenting the loss of her long and fruitful life while enjoying the tread of scholars along her floors and the joy of an alicorn princess among her branches.

Oh.
My.
Gosh...
Did someone just tell me to write a story?!

4678766 You may consider that, yes. Somebody prodded me to write it, and I'm about two years behind on existing projects, so I'll pass the poke along.

In the center of Ponyville, under the light of the moon and stars, a tree dreamed of times long past. Of storms and summers, of patrons walking quietly among her shelf-lined walls and the loud cries of the young. Of books, lined and straight, filled with the knowledge of ponies long dead and awaiting a chance to live again in the hooves of an interested reader. Of rain and sunshine and wind, the droning of bees in her leaves, and the touch of the snow upon her crown. She was the queen of all she surveyed, ruler and guiding hoof, a refuge for weary souls battered by the world and a beacon of learning for the hungry masses. But once, long ago, before she had bark and leaves to surround her precious treasure, she was something else. Something smaller, and more frail.

Libris dreamed of when she was a pony.

… is this the end yet?

*applauds*

Why yes, yes it is the end.

You know, on rereading this, I really hope it didn't come across as mean-spirited. I was doing the "riffing off of the first line of your post" joke and, looking back, there's a whole "yay it's over" subtext that I absolutely didn't intend. :(

So, to be clear: Yay! It's time to start doing these again!

Naw, I knew precisely what you were going for.

Also, I tend to assume things like that are joking unless proven otherwise.

Oh good. 😅
