But Why Though · 9:51pm Aug 26th, 2017
Like, seriously. I don't know how this happened. Scootaloo vs Chrysalis was in the feature box for three days, sharing the same space as stories by Aragon and Justice3442, both of whom are far better at the comedic arts than I. I am simultaneously overjoyed and saddened. For you see, I put basically zero effort into that story. Like, an hour of work, tops. And, somehow, it is now the second most popular story I've ever written for this site.
Most of the time, I try to put forth quality work. Stories that tackle deep themes, plunge characters into new arcs of growth, or provide a unique experience. This story was none of those things. I just taped a fandom meme to a Zelda reference. And you people ate it up.
I just...
For your sake and mine, please go read some of my other comedies. They are all better than this one. Here, I'll even embed the ones that don't require preexisting knowledge of another franchise to appreciate. Go nuts.
The audience's taste is a strange and inscrutable thing.
I had near the same question when I first got featured. "Why this one? Why not that last one that actually meant something to me?"
Simple. Comedy sells. As do short/punchy stories no longer than 3k. I guess video game references, too.
But I wouldn't fret about it. Since my first feature, I've still managed (in my mind) to release a good half-dozen personal stories that still somehow found an audience. I think a lot of that has to do with how you present an idea and if you already have a minor following -- people might be more open to your weirder/darker/more dramatic stuff if they like a bunch of your stories already.
Or... who knows? I mean, Johnny Bravo is featured right now. What great tastes this site has?
