Must... milk... enjoyable... sub-franchise... without making... full spin-off series... ugh!
So, first short is the girls getting ready for the dance in the first film. And it’s just three minutes of one obvious joke, Rarity gussying up Applejack in gaudy make-up, Applejack makes her dress her back down. The only thing I noticed is that wow, Rarity’s dress REALLY highlights her boobs. Like, seriously, the eye is constantly being drawn to how perfectly outlined her chest is.
Then it’s on to the dance and Photo Finish’s photo booth where the cast gets pictures taken, and we get continuity references to Rarity’s glossimer wings (which catch fire and Rainbow saves her) and Detective Twi and Pinkie.
Second short, dance-off with Applejack and Apple Bloom facing Rainbow and Scootaloo but ofc it becomes AJ vs RD with the young’uns off to the side. Then the two go dance on their own. And Pinkie gives them a trophy for... something.
Third short, Fluttershy tries being a cheerleader with Pinkie. That’s the joke, it is exactly what you think it is. The highlight is the appearance of the human Ponytones, called the Wondertones. And then Pinkie does a high kick that basically puts her legs perpendicular to the ground and I’m pretty sure the whole campus just got a peek at Pinkie’s pie. Oookay then.
In a rather odd departure, the final short is obviously post-Everfree, since Twi has pictures of Timber Spruce. It’s that old music video we saw in Russian (was it Russian? I forget) where Sci-Twi goes mad scientist and sciences up a robot dog girlfriend for Spike. Song is deeply bland and forgettable. I did do a triple take though where I swore I hear a lyric “I think I’m gonna piss myself.” No, they said pinch, but I’m going by the Wiki’s lyrics because that was NOT what I heard.
By the way, not even a mention of Sunset in any of these. Which I don’t mind, the series is bigger than her... except the Equestria Girls logos and animations for the franchise they use include her.
So... these are things. I really have nothing to say on them. They exist, they’re kinda cute. But otherwise, meh. The first three shorts are basically just deleted scenes from the first movie, even if they actually aren’t that’s basically what they are. The fourth short is fine but it could have just been tossed up on Hasbro’s YT channel months ago like the other music videos they’ve released before.
I honestly question the reason these were made. If the Equestria Girls franchise is not going to get its own spin-off show, fine, but then the showrunners keep making specials and shorts and music videos. Either they want to make a full spin-off but are being told no and this is the only way they can get new content out, or they don’t want to make a full spin-off but want to keep milking the series. Either way, lame.

I really do hope these are laying the foundation for a spin-off show next year, because otherwise I don't see why these shorts with outsourced animation need to exisit. We already have the three specials that have the combined run time of a movie.

I honestly really liked the dance-off. Remember, AJ and Dash hated each other a few days before. The dance battle was straining a barely mended relationship... but then enter their little sisters, dancing together instead of against each other. Cue emergency trophy and a reminder of the friendship the two had when they were freshmen.
Also, strongly implied Scootalove.
It's marketing 101 if you ask me. They seem to be going toward the full series route but they are releasing these while they work on that perhaps. Cause I think they confirmed a 5th movie after which likely they will get a series depending how well it does.
Now that in mind if they do make this a series it'll probably air on Discovery family on Sunday's or maybe Friday so it stays near mlp but still has its own slot to get its time to shine cause it's obvious to me that they wanna do more with the concept; why in the Hell would they release the shorts? I think it was a good idea to keep Sunset out for these small ones cause the people who make the show know for a fact she is without a doubt the MOST POPULAR EG CHARACTER. They don't need to push her in everything or promote her cause they know fans love her already (even though I'd like to have seen her)
If I had to venture a guess if EG does in fact go full series then it would happen after the MLP movie and season 7 of the show...possibly season 8 who knows but think about it this way...if they were really just milking it for money they wouldn't put so much effort into them and to be fair they are shorts so its not like we can expect a whole lot but if the shorts do well it could get the traction it needs and the push to go that route...I mean I know this is a VERY SHITTY comparison and I swear to Celestia and Luna I will never make it again... Look at *throw up in mouth* teen titans go...it started as a short on DC nation and now look at it...I mean its cancer for cartoon network but it does what they want it to do(trying so hard not to rant about it)
EG is popular... It makes money...fans of MLP love it(mostly) and newcomers do to(mostly) so really its just a matter of time if they keep it up and I believe there are 4 more shorts and those feature Sunset as well as another new song so let's see where this all goes. My hope is for it to do well cause EG really deserves it
Just watched them. Totally heard 'piss myself' too. 'I think I'm gonna pinch myself' isn't really something someone would say, either, you'd just do it rather than think you're going to.
The more I've seen of the Equestria Girls franchise this year, the more it seems to be done mostly for a joke, sadly.
