So, the Dreamrealm... · 5:34am Jun 17th, 2017

If you are like me, you are fascinated by and want to know more about the dreamrealm. So, naturally, you look around for more information...

Only to find there is next to no canon information. So, let's start with what little we know.

But here is where I put the break, because I can...

So, the earliest view we have of the dreamrealm:

(Bloom & Gloom)

Now, this is pretty self explanatory. One can guess that those are stars in the background, which would be cool, but we don't find out until the third time we see the dreamrealm, and it isn't stars. Obviously, the doors are the doors to dreams, and the design probably reflects the dreamer's personality.

Now, the second time we see the realm, it is quite different:

(Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?)

This time, Luna connects with the dreamers through magical leylines, which honestly looks kinda creepy. However, we get no information whatsoever as to why it looks like this this time. I can only assume it is because she is projecting her literal self into the dreams, rather than just her consciousness. But, as so often happens with such things, we don't actually know.

Then we see it a third time:

(Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?)

We don't really have an explanation for this, but I believe this to be the heart of the dreamrealm, only accessible to one who has overcome great hardship and is in a state of total peace. It is otherwise impossible to find, and you never realize you have been there.

Finally, the fourth, and most recent, view of the dreamrealm:

(A Royal Problem)

And now we find out what those orbs in the background of the first picture are, more dreams. Why does Luna have a door and Celestia have orbs, you ask? I could chalk it down to the way they use magic, but I won't. I, hereby, hypothesize that there are different dimensions of the dreamrealm, for different types of dreams and different depths of sleep. However, this is simply a preference.

Personally, I don't really like how little canon gives us and how much I have to theorize. But, such is the case. So, I may as well make some good headcannons as long as I'm making them.

  • The orbs as seen in the fourth example, are the dreams of wishes and desires.
  • The doors. The doors are dreams where the dreamer is dreaming about life, such as getting or losing a cutie mark.
  • Luna does not usually project her actual self into dreams, but she can if she has to. Those are the leylines.
  • Nightmares go into the category that they would be in if they were good dreams, like losing a part of life would go into the life-dreams.
  • There are also many other creatures living within the dreamrealm, such as Starbeasts, and they typically have their own dimension. Sometimes, however, one becomes powerful enought to break through dimensional walls and either appear in the real world, or infect the sleeping-dimensions, in which case Luna has to stop them.
  • If you have ever seen the movie Doctor Strange, then you know what the MIrror Dimension is. There are also dimensions such as that in the dreamrealm, except they need no creatures to be chaotic.
  • Discord has the power to infect dreams, and I am debating the possibility that he is from the dream realm itself.
  • Some examples of other dimensions are these:

Now, I will admit I took some ideas from a certain story on this site, called Trixie Lulamoon of the Dreamguard. It is an amazing story, and I fully accept 99.9% of all ideas presented in it. In fact, I'm gonna re-read that within the week.

I'd point out that the only time we see the dreamrealm from the outside is in "do princesses dream of magic sheep". It could be that the leylines are always present and we just don't see them. From Luna's perspective, it probably looked exactly like what we saw with celestia in "a royal problem". as for doors vs orbs, the doors are probably just the way one enters a dream. The orbs are for quick viewing. Note we didn't see celestia enter starlights dream. She was just all of a sudden there.

ooh, my friend and i were just talking about how interesting the dreamrealm is! i gotta show this to her"

"Stop blowing holes in my boat!"

This is a possiblity, and I considered putting it in my analysis, but I prefered my theories listed above. It's nice to see what you think, though. I was actually hoping people would say things such as that.

Oh really? Well, I'm glad I was of some use.

That is also a possibility, and a likely at that. Thanks for adding your thoughts.
