Episode Review - S7E7 Parental Glidance · 6:43pm May 7th, 2017
Seriously, what is up with all the punny titles? I know bad horse puns have been a staple of the show since the first episode, but really.
So, in an effort to get rid of a bad cough, I took some prescription cough syrup. Bad idea; after coming home from work after less than an hour because I threw up, I have spent all morning in bed. But I crawled out to watch pony.
A surprisingly solid episode with only one misstep. I loved the slingshot, I loved Scootaloo's reaction to meeting Rainbow's parents, I liked that Rainbow and the folks both learned a lesson. I liked the Lightning Dust cameo, I caught the sight joke of Derpy's eyes derping more as she fell in rank, and I liked the Wonderbolts being supportive of Rainbow and not making fun of her for them. Orphanloo pretty much confirmed. Once again they reuse the same popcorn bucket with the same kernels.
Only misstep was Scootaloo disowning Rainbow after she snaps. They made their saving throw to explain why Scootaloo thinks parents like this are awesome, but I felt it was a bit too much.
Also, Rainbow Blaze =/= Bow Hothoof. Blaze appears in the background of Hearth's Warming Tale and looks the same. My guess is either uncle or cousin (I doubt Rainbow has siblings, these seem like the kind of parents who had an only child).
Overall good ep with a lot of little touches I liked.
And now back to bed to nurse my ginger ale and cup of soup.

At this point, I don't think MLP is following everything as canon anymore, or these flashbacks are just providing false filler information. Wasn't it at the Wonderbolt Academy that Rainbow Dash and Lightning Dust met? They showed no interactions of having met before, yet according to that flashback, they participated in that same race, many times to the point where Lightning is upset for having lost to Rainbow Dash. I'm pretty sure they would remember each other then. (Heck, the 3 main Wonderbolts were there too.)
Also, wow, there was a time when Derpy was a better flier than even Lightning Dust. Either something happened to really tamper her flying abilities overtime, or the other fillies just sucked at flying that badly until they improved enough. Might be some interesting fan fictions there with Derpy with those events and how she fell down the ranks.
But like I said, I find it hard to take the background details of that flash back as complete canon information.

Yeah, funnily enough, my "'Rainbow Dad' = uncle" headcanon yet remains. :V
I didn't like the message. False praise is NOT a good thing; in real life it causes people to develop low expectations.

In real life, different children will react to the same treatment in different ways depending on a variety of other external and internal influencing factors. There is no one right or wrong way to raise a child; if it was we would have figured out the pattern by now.

Course I should also tell you that I'm annoyed that some episode portray one character as in the wrong despite not actually being in the wrong.
The episode Fluttershy Leans In, I was half expecting Fluttershy "learn" that she should just let the experts do things THEIR way and not try to disapprove of their "help" because of how so many episodes of this show are. Especially Rainbow Dash episodes.
Keep in mind though: If this is the worst episode of the season it's a good season.
4523757 Problem with praises for a child. If everyone including their parents continuously tell them their performance was absolutely terrible, what motivation would they have to keep going and improve? If you were constantly told you were performing terribly on your first attempt at things, you would not enjoy them. It's far worse when a child is told that.
And it's especially embarrassing when it's only your parents who tell you that you're doing a good job at something, whether the performance was good or bad.

I just don't like how her parents were ridiculous so RD tells them to knock it off and then apparently RD's in the wrong. I'm surprised the Wonderbolts didn't call security on her parents for trespassing.

Ah. I see what you mean. You have no idea how badly I felt with that during Newbie Dash. There is such a thing as too much of something. But this season 7 episode wasn't nearly as bad when showing that.
Also, new canon. Rainbow finds comfort sleeping Anywhere!

4523877 She's just a very curious fangirling filly, who is probably confirmed to be an orphan now. She wouldn't know what it's like to have parents, let alone know the embarrassing sides to it, especially when it comes to fangirling.
4523622 Well, they were shown to have competed while in the pegasus equivalent of elementary school. I personally don't remember anyone from my elementary school days, so it's possible they just forgot about each other.
As for Derpy, if you look, you can see that her eyes weren't wonky when she won. Maybe she used to be a great flyer, then something happened to her.

Both of them didn't remember each other, or even have any familiarities of something they both loved and competed with. Not even recognizing names.
Little thought... Rainbow was the youngest in that race, which apparently means Derpy is older than Rainbow... as well as everypony else in there. Wow, Rainbow's young.
