    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    Ping

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

Incoming: Heavy Rock release date, question about how to release it · 7:27pm Mar 13th, 2017

Okay dudes and dudettes, the end is in sight for Heavy Rock. If you're looking forward to some heavy metal Equestria Girls Limestone Pie romance, be ready to rock as of Monday March 20th at 1pm Pacific. :rainbowdetermined2:

We salute you!

Now to my question: at 12 chapters and ~22K words, this thing is the single biggest chunk of story that I've ever released on FimFiction. I could drop it all at once, or I could release a chapter a day until it's done. I've seen people do both, and I'm not sure what would be the best approach here. I don't want to make people wait unnecessarily (and Lord knows I've waited long enough myself to get it out there), but I don't have much sense of whether the length might scare people off.

Or this. That's no good either.

So that's the question: which would you prefer, all things being equal?

I say serialize it. That much at once can be intimidating and overwhelming.

I agree with FOME, at least from experience. Releasing too much at once has never failed to produce a low reader count (for me).

I agree with FOME and Trick Question. 22k words at once is a bit overwhelming even if it is split into chapters. I've done it both ways, and I think serialization is the better option. It might also help build hype, which Heavy Rock deserves.

2+ years later, I still wonder if I should have serialized my first story rather than dropping it all at once.

I am blessed with sage advice from experienced people. Thank you all!

So let it be written; so let it be done. :pinkiecrazy:

Serialize that thing! Leave us in suspense rather than show us everything!

Cerealize Surrealize Serialize it! :trollestia:

I agree with the group. Releasing it a little at a time can keep it fresh for folks and make it easier for folks to follow.

I'm glad I asked. My instinct would have been to drop it all at once. Wasn't it Johnny Bravo who said something about hating delayed gratification? :derpytongue2:

4455424 Eh, its just better that way with a multi-chapter story. Only oneshots should be shot out all at once.
