    State of the Unicorn: Poor

That's poor in both senses, I'm afraid! Though before I say any more, I need to stress that I have a warm, safe home, enough to eat, internet access... the essentials, really. I am not in danger of losing those. However, I won't be doing much beyond those essentials for a while. Without going into boring details, I will very shortly be going in for dental work to be done. Which, as

    Happy Hearth's Warming Eve!

I keep my online activity to an absolute minimum on Christmas Day, so I'll take this opportunity to wish all of you reading this a Merry Christmas!¹ However life has treated you over the past year, I hope it treats you better over the next. I shall be back to reading Fimfiction on Boxing Day!

    So then, Doctor Who

Loved it! A few little quibbles, not all the acting from the newcomers was stellar and sadly parts of the gender-related stuff felt awkward and forced, eg "something a male-presenting Time Lord wouldn't understand", but I liked much more than I didn't. Plus one of my worries about the new Disney-cash-infused Who has been dispelled: this definitely did

    Bloody Covid

Fortunately not in the literal sense! But yeah, I'm currently stuck at home, yet not feeling well enough to concentrate on ponyfic. It's a seriously annoying combination. :pinkiesick:

    UK PonyCon report

This is inelegantly copy/pasted over from the (slightly) nicer looking report over on Louder Yay. Of course, I'm sure you all read Louder Yay anyway because you're such great people, but just in case here's the report here as well...

Announcing the Flashfic 150 monthly contests! · 4:21pm Mar 5th, 2017

Before anyone gets excited, there are no prizes for these events. Well, not really. Okay, the three people still here, read on!

I was looking for a flash fiction group on Fimfiction, but couldn't find one. So I started one! Having done that, I also thought it would be fun to hold a simple, laid back contest for short flashfics. This will of course depend on there being enough people interested, and as I type the group's membership is still tiny. Hence this post.

As the contest's name implies, the idea is to write to a 150-word limit. A prompt is announced at the start of the month, you get three weeks to submit something, I read them and pick a winner... and if you win, you get to choose the following month's prompt. Yep, that's all the "prize" you get in the merry world of Flashfic 150! :twilightsheepish:

The first Flashfic 150 contest is planned to start on 1st April 2017.

Ooh. You have my attention. I mean, I've been wanting to write for a while, and even I can manage 150 words in a month.

...

What? Why are you looking at me like that, it's not that impossible!

4444543 I feel it only right to break it to you that you only get three weeks' actual writing time. The rest of the month is for judging, results, choosing of the next prompt, appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Ponyfic, etc etc. So you'll need to average more than seven words per day! :pinkiegasp:

All joking aside, you'd be very welcome!

So, three weeks for 150 words works out to ≈ 7 words per day. And as SS&E has amply demonstrated with his various chapter-a-day projects, a steady stream of content is a better way to hook readers than one massive text dump. This brings up the obvious question:

Am I permitted to submit my story in the form of one post per day, one sentence long each, for twenty-one days? :trollestia:

4444559 You can submit it that way if you feel it appropriate. I can then judge it as I feel appropriate. :flutterrage:

Actually, since we're still at the start of the month... any chance of a prompt now? Or would you rather wait until April?

4444834 In all honesty, I decided on April because I didn't expect to have more than a couple of members until quite late in March! I'm a bit iffy about the idea of an early contest, having been so explicit about things kicking off in April. I'm not sure everyone will be watching the group until then.

What I may well do in the next day or two is to set up a non-competitive practice thread, since I think that might be useful anyway if we get any members who aren't used to the flashfic format. Watch this space! Well, not this one. The one in the Flashfic forum. :twilightsheepish:

Considering I've never done flashfic, I'd appreciate some practice, if that helps. :derpytongue2:

4445156 Your wish is my command!* I've set up a practice thread now, so take a look at that and see how it strikes you.

* As long as you wish for something I want to do anyway. Otherwise, nope.

I shall share the news my good man!:pinkiehappy:

4464621 Thanks very much!
