[NEW FIC] Back to writing ponies! (...sorta)

tl;dr - I put ponies in another fic, but only for a few chapters

So, real quick, minor confession...this fic is actually one of my oldest, and it's not on this site.

Hey, easy, easy, let me explain.

[UPDATE] It's like being nibbled to death by cats

This chapter is a straight up continuation of the previous chapter, and there's literally zero time skip, unlike most of my chapters in this fic. So much so, in fact, that what had originally been two separate chapters (Gilda fights Sunset, sleepover happens) had to be combined into one because the "Gilda fights Sunset" chapter was going to be too long. It was during the

[UPDATE] Yes, you saw that right, new chapter

Not much to say about this one that the notes at the bottom of the chapter itself don't already say. Obviously, my health is much better and my sleep is improving to the point where I'm not having to take medication for it nearly as often. Work is going pretty good (I'll post about that at some point, it deserves its own post) and I've gotten HYPER into The Lost Tomb, which if you haven't read it

[UPDATE] When you get medical confirmation...

So I've said in my rather sporadic updates that I've been going through a lot, and I believe I've mentioned that the things that have been happening have been rather more draining on the ol' spoons than I otherwise expected.

[FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS] I'm finally out of the Feature Box · 2:39pm Feb 14th, 2017

From Saturday to Tuesday, I was in the Feature Box for The Consequences of Good Intentions. In that time I gathered over 200 new fans of my work. I happened to post out the first three chapters of a new fic called Lost Little Wolf, which thanks entirely to the increased exposure from CoGI (...and now that I look at that acronym I REALLY should have found a way to work in a 'R') also netted a fairly large number of new followers right away, much faster than I normally would have gotten for a brand new story. Even Double Trixie Trouble got some new readers from the flash of popularity, even more than when it reached the feature box on it's own.

And thank you, all of you new readers. I've done my best to distribute "fan" badges to each and every one of you, but some might have slipped through the cracks. If you're a new reader and I somehow missed giving you a badge, you can have this one:

Being out of the Feature Box also means I'll be able to give people individual attention when they follow/fave/bookshelf my work. Not that I don't make every effort to do so anyway, but when you've got 10 minutes to get through 25 new followers so you can do things like "eat food" and "sleep", it kinda limits how much time I can spend on everyone. :raritywink:

A quick "state of the fiction" for everyone...

Horse-fiction
* Double Trixie Trouble - A time-skip heavy story about Equestria's first ambassador to the human world on the other side of the mirror. I started writing this before Friendship Games came out and this is an Alternate Universe series of events to the main EQG storyline. Also, by way of fair warning, when I say "time-skip heavy," I'm not talking about events, fast-forward, events, fast-forward, etc., I'm talking event, fast-forward, events, rewind, events, rewind, events, fast-forward, etc. (Go read it, you'll understand by the time you get to chapter 3) For those who want more of this, I have to do a "re-sync" of the events to make sure I don't have any overlap. (I'm glad I do these, as the first time I checked for this I found out I had events that were supposed to happen on a school day on a Sunday) Once I do that, I'll be able to pound out another three chapters or so.

* Lost Little Wolf - A "self insert" experiment. The main character (me) dies in our world and wakes up reborn as an infant changeling queen in Chrysalis' hive. As mentioned before, this is the culmination of many different story ideas I've had rattling around in my head for some time. I have at least one "book" for this story planned, with two possible follow ups. Work on this will proceed as inspiration strikes.

If you're hoping for a sequel to "The Consequences of Good Intentions"...well, that's a big fat "maybe." Yes, there's fertile soil there for LOTS of follow-up, but there's two major constraints; First, the story format is "lots of stuff has happened already, that's the real story, what the reader is taking in now is the aftermath of all that stuff plus the climax and denouement all in one." The point of this story is to re-tell all the previous events in as few words as possible and still create the same "ride" as a regular, episodic story. This isn't easy to do on demand except when inspiration strikes exactly perfectly and at the exactly right time. I've already got a few ideas, but they haven't crystallized (that was a big fat HINT, btw) into anything solid yet. Second, as much as Sporktacles has given me full endorsement to do what I want, I'm still kinda just playing in that sandbox. I'm a HUGE fangirl of her work, and am kinda waiting with bated breath just like everyone else to see what she does with it next.

You may have noticed a cancelled work called "Ponyfication Nation." That's still cancelled. I do still get the occasional inquiry about it, so I thought I'd address those now. I started writing that back in 2011, when the fandom was still only about a year old. At the time, I was pretty much the only Brony to have the audacity to have an OC Alicorn as their avatar, we didn't have Equestria Girls, and we also only had the two alicorns (Celestia and Luna), so having a SI story where I and my family become the new defacto leaders of a bunch of ponified humans on our Earth wasn't quite the stretch it would be today. Hell, we'd only seen a single gryphon, Discord had made one appearance, Luna was almost forgotten about by the show staff, and the scandal over Derpy's voice hadn't even happened when I first sat down to work on Ponyfication Nation. On a more personal level, my wife and I were still together, my daughter was only just getting into school, and I was lucky enough to have a part-time job that was still able to pay the bills. In the real world, we hadn't yet had Gamergate, Obamacare was still a bomb that was in the process of dropping and hadn't yet caused damage, there were two election cycles that I would never have guessed the outcomes of, and political alliances and petty bickering hadn't yet caused half the world to forget that there were actual terrorists who actually wanted to actually kill us all for the "sin" of not being just like them. Ponyfication Nation was started in a different time and for an audience in that world. We no longer live in that world. Could I re-work it to fit today's world? Yeah, probably, but it would be a MUCH different beast, even in the first two chapters. There are a few scenes that I had worked out in my head that were flat out epic (a battle with Discord and the ponified Bronies being the first line of defence in stopping a hostile invasion come to mind) that I might write as one-offs just to share them with the world, but that's on the list of things to do when I have more time and money than I do now.

Non-horse-fiction
Sailor Moon/Ranma 1/2 - Fission - This is my single largest publicly available writing project I've ever done. I have no fewer than seven books planned (possibly eight), so even though there's nearly 70k words published, that's pretty much just a drop in the bucket. While work on this has slowed to a relative crawl, I am still plugging away on it and expect to have a new chapter out soon. If you're unfamiliar with Ranma 1/2, I'm sorry, you missed out and I blame your parents. :trollestia: You can catch all episodes of the anime for Ranma 1/2 on Viz Media's website. As for Sailor Moon, if you've never watched any of the anime, I'm sorry, you missed out and I blame Richard Nixon. :pinkiehappy: If you haven't already done so, get a membership to Crunchyroll and watch Sailor Moon Crystal, at least through the end of the Queen Beryl arc. Once you've got those under your belt, you'll have a solid foundation to pick up Fission, a story where Ranma Saotome and Usagi Tsukino's respective destinies get the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup treatment thanks to a magic accident.

MegaMan - Generations of Heroes - Inspired by the rock-opera works put together by The Protomen, this is the "bad ending" universe of the first MegaMan game. Even though Rockman has defeated everything Dr. Wily can throw at him, having lost his brother and the fight for humanity's future, Rockman is still defeated. In hiding and preferring to spend his days getting as drunk as an artificial life form possibly can, Rock is pulled back into the fight when a sister he didn't know he had tracks him down. This one is hard to write for, because it's so depressing, but I will eventually be telling the story through the end of MegaMan 3, also introducing elements of the Rockman.EXE universe later on.

Ranma 1/2/I, Me, My Strawberry Eggs - Destiny is Like Turtle Wax - I, Me, My Strawberry Eggs is a damn near impossible title to track down these days, but if you can find the show, watch it all. I did try to write "Destiny is Like Turtle Wax" so you wouldn't have to watch either show it's based on, but like any fanfiction it can be somewhat confusing if you're not at least a little familiar with the original work(s) it's based on. Suffice to say for right now that there's plenty of areas of overlap, and like the original I, Me, My Strawberry Eggs, I'm planning on using this fic as a way of taking a good, hard, sometimes uncomfortable look at things we Might Not Want To Talk About(tm) as a polite society.

Unpublished stuff I'm working on
Ever After High - Destiny with a Capital 'D' - Takes place after Dragon Games, Apple White must come to terms with her "Destined Prince" being not Daring Charming, but his sister Darling Charming. If you haven't watched Ever After High, it's a surprisingly deep series that starts with the question of, "Do I have agency over my own life, or am I always going to follow a pre-chosen path?"

The Wizard's Secretary - An original work based loosely on The Dresden Files (similar setting and world-building, different characters and locations, will likely diverge quite significantly down the road from The Dresden Files universe), this follows the adventures of a wizard in the modern world and his secretary.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - [Untitled] - An alternate universe tailor created to address a HIGHLY problematic issue in the more...sexually adventurous parts of the Brony community. This fic is set in a universe where about 10% of the mares in Equestria have both male and female genitalia. When Applebloom gets pregnant by one of these futa-mares, one who's well known and well over the age of Majority (making the act that leads to Applebloom getting pregnant legally Statutory Rape, whether AB was a willing participant or not), the farm-filly and her baby's 'father' go on the run. This story is set at least five years later, when Applebloom has turned 18, the statute of limitations has run out, and she wants to take her filly Zap Apple back home to the farm. This isn't about the sex act (there will be ZERO sex scenes), and it's not about futanari (while mentioned and briefly explained, the focus will not be on the presence of such persons in the world), it's about what happens as a consequence of making incredibly stupid and illegal decisions and the aftermath thereof. I got inspired by this due to a discussion on one of the message boards on this site where I was arguing for the removal of a particularly repulsive image as the "main face" of a group that featured futanari. I lost the argument, and the image is still up, so if you know the group I'm referring to you'll already have a little bit of a spoiler.

My congratulations once again on your achievement. I hope this next seven days is as fruitful for you.

Clearly, the story should've been entitled The Consequences of Really Good Intentions. In any case, congrats.

Congratulations on making it into the feature box

(blinks) Wait - YOU'RE the author of "Fission"? I've had that fic in my favorites since... sometime in the first two years it was on that site (my favorites listings lists it as having been favorited pre-2008). And I've been waiting for more updates on it for over six years now.

Looking forward to more of both that and "Double Trixie Trouble" (which I just finished reading, and which is due to be favorited as soon as I find eight more stories to go with it - I add fics to my favorites in even batches).

Until next time...
