All right guys, this is it. Now that we've reached the capital of the Griffon Empire at last, there's only one thing to decide ...

Griffonstone? Or Sheerwater?

And on a side note, now most of you can probably see why that episode rang a little hollow for me.

Griffonshire Waterstone

I'd say Sheerwater just to differentiate from the alternative.

Well, the episode stated that Griffonstone was within Equestria (Twilight calling it "the coolest kingdom in Equestria").
And since the official map shows an arrow pointing away from Equestria labeled "Yonder to Griffons", it's fair to assume that there is a lot regarding Griffons we havent seen yet.

^ I'm going to side with this chap's reasoning.

"Griffonstone Eyrie" might have been a reasonably powerful sovereign griffon city-state at one time, but it falls within what is now Equestria's borders and is hardly the heart of an empire. I imagine that in the current political landscape it may be like Hong Kong, or possibly Monaco.

Griffinstone was created as a one-off setting specifically for the plot of the episode. That's why there was the gigantic sign saying "one-off location" hovering over the place. When they finished filming, everyone left all the props and buildings behind because they were so dirt cheap. (Decent episode but terribly boring worldbuilding.)

Griffonstone could be the Kyoto to Sheerwater's Tokyo.

Yeah Griffonstone rang a rather hollow note for me as well. The backstory of the Griffon's in the episode just doesn't seem to really hold a candle to the characterizations I've seen for them both in the Dusk Guard and elsewhere. So I'm all for Sheerwater. Plus Sheerwater is a combination of two of my top favorite landscapes :pinkiehappy:

I like 3337304's idea. Given the show doesn't give more than very very vague time scale, it could be possible that Griffonstone was once the mighty Griffon capital, but that after the loss of the idle it fell hard. Most Griffons abandoned it over time and eventually it became so separated from the rest of the Empire (or this could be pre Empire) that it was eventually absorbed into a growing Equestria. Leaving things open for the rise of Sheerwater as the center of the Empire. Given the known way the Empire will expunge apparent disgraces from the history books, Hain as an example, I could see something similar happening to Griffonstone.

Then I think I might be rambling now... Yeah I felt the world building in that ep was a very wasted opportunity.

Sheerwater. Of course You could say that Griffinstone is a separatist group wallowing in the despair of their former glory.

I have to assume that Griffonstone is not your canon. The way you portray griffens, leads me to believe that they would not abandon the other griffons, in Griffonstone. So, taking that into account, I believe you should name the place Sheerwater, to seperate your canon from the show.

Or if you want the place to be called Griffonstone, it's your choice. It is fine by me.
