Ranked second on Fimfic!? · 1:19am Aug 21st, 2015
Like... intellectually, I'm aware that this isn't much to write home about. I have no idea how the ranking system works, but Fimfic has many better read, better liked, and better stories than my little effort at a Christmas tale. Maybe it's the... "thumbs-up to thumbs-down ratio?" Or something.
Still pretty cool, though. Thanks for reading it.
Here's a blog post explaining the rating system, if you're interested. It is a function of upvotes, downvotes, and total votes.
Also, I can tell you from experience that being in the top 10 rated both gets you a bunch of views and inevitably causes someone to find it who doesn't like it and bump it way down the ratings list.

It's really ridiculous. When I switched my upvote to a downvote, it immediately went to rank 404. Switching it back, it returns to 2nd. Very silly.
Edit: Also, if I go to Top stories of all time, there is no story that has first place.

That... is silly.
Yet it kind of makes sense. With literally tens of thousands of fics on this site, many of them will be effectively tied in any rating system. So I'm not terribly surprised to see:
If the top 100 stories have a 0.3% difference, it's very easy to see how a minuscule change can make a rating explode.
(I'm smarter now.)
The science of the voting system.
I know it sounds like a really silly function to use, but since I'm a physicist, I can see the sense in it. If they went by straight UV/DV ratio, 1/0 would be the best in the business. They're doing a Wilson score thing, which makes sense. The issue that exists is that an upvote carries roughly speaking 8 times less weight than 1 downvote.
Either way, congrats on hitting #2!
Congrats on hitting #1!

It might stay up there for a while.
The image and little required commitment to make sense of it. The fair and regular pacing, and such make it seem less likely to gain downvotes from being featured. Starts great in the first lines, too.
and well, to not describe is all. It gets a nice crescendo, and passes through a good background yules thing before getting tacky. Or moreso.
So luck permits, not only may thy story get good on not attracting downvotes, but it's pretty good too. An excellent run of the river with an almost tacky straight flush. If I were to guess, it might in the tops for quite the while. But then I don't know the erratic potential of being tops. It's very different from featured, which rather kills the narrow-genred.
