Question about the Yaks (not story related) · 9:59pm Jun 29th, 2015
I'm pretty sure everyone noticed the Viking-like nature of the yaks from the newest episode. The big horns, the snowy region, the hot temperaments.
But am I alone in thinking that this isn't quite correct? Their clothing, the descriptions of their lifestyles, the name of their country, and their species, say to me that they're culturally from southwest and central Asia, the area stretching from Kazakhstan to the Himalayas.
Anyone else get this impression? Everywhere I look I see people saying "Vikings". Am I alone on this?
No, I've seen people say Central Asia and Middle East.
Also Klingons.
I didn't automatically think, 'Vikings.' I thought 'some form of barbarian,' based on their behavior. I have to agree, though, and bout them being somewhere near the Himalayans. It makes since, based on the description twilight gives of the location of Yakyakistan (had to check the wiki for the spelling there). She says "It's so far north of the Crystal Empire, nopony's ever been there!" when we consider that there are no mountains within the immediate vicinity of TCE, it makes perfect sense...
and yet, I can't remember where North Dakota is on an unlabeled map...
I think they're they're more like Mongols than Vikings myself. So yeah, you're not alone. I think it's just the horns and giant wooden statues that make everybody think Vikings.
I've seen both Vikings and Mongols as analogues for the yaks, but I'm inclined to go with Mongols. After all, Scandinavia doesn't have yaks.
I havn't seen the episode yet.
Mongols, man.
Mongols.
More importantly, why was it Twilight's responsibility over the Yaks when they share a border with the CRYSTAL EMPIRE?
"Vikings" definitely wasn't my first thought, especially with the name of their country ending in "-stan." Central Asia-inspired sounds right on the money to me.
I always thought they were Mongols or Sherpa.
