    Never A Dull Moment

Thank you all for helping me out back in May  The support means the world to me, and thanks to your kind contributions I was able to go and visit my boy in Britain. I'll try and mock up a proper recap blog—though I am notoriously terrible at doing those, I don't think I've ever managed a proper recap blog for any of the various conventions I've gone to over the years. I guess there was

Holy Fucking Shit: 100 [SPOILERS] · 6:46pm Jun 13th, 2015

Bon Bon: I really can't believe it. Your darkest secret is that you ate my oats? Really?
Lyra: Yup!
Bon Bon: So you haven't done ANYTHING worse than that?
(Lyra's expression goes blank, the vague sounds of helicopters and machine guns in the background)
Oh dear sweet Celestia! They blew off my hooves! I can't feel a thing!
Don't worry! I gotcha! I gotcha!
O-Oh fff... Lyra... a-am I gonna be okay? What's happening?
(gun cocking) D-Don't worry... I g-got you...
L-Lyra?
BLAM
(Lyra falls over, sobbing)
Bon Bon: L-Lyra?
Lyra: [heavy vietneighmese]

So, the fabled episode 100 has finally arrived! With all the hype leading up to it, it was bound to not live up to expectations. And while I gotta say, I wasn't blown away by it, it was a very fun episode.

This is a lot to take in, and I honestly can't tell you to do anything but watch the episode. It's something that I feel will divide the fandom greatly, and you really need to formulate your own opinion.

THAT BEING SAID

Here's my opinion:

This episode relied FAR too much on references and not on its own merits. I felt like I was watching Family Guy in pony form; it was "let's see how many pop culture references we can smash into 20 minutes." Thankful, it is missing most of the other shit that makes Family Guy unbearable (mainly Seth McFarlen's "humor"), but I digress.

Time Turner
The Doctor Who shit made me cringe every time it was brought up. It went from a simple nudge and a wink at the show and the fans to "LOL WE WATCH DR WHO AS WELL GAIZ". They laid it on waaaay too thick. Time Turner could have been an absent minded professor and inventor with a love for math and science; instead, that part of him was vastly overshadowed by the numerous shoehorned references to Doctor Who.

However, his line about science and math being more valuable than magic to him has LOTS of potential. He's an Earth Pony; his magic comes from places that aren't as obvious as unicorn (or even pegasi) magic. Being more grounded to that part of reality and being so deeply invest and ingrained in it IS his magic, and really rings true to the Earth Pony way.

Derpy
The muffins bit made me groan, but that was the only time I wasn't loving Derpy. They made her cute as hell, and her new voice is even more endearing than her original one from season 2. It's slightly lispy, slightly slurred, and 100 percent adorable. There were TONS of fanon tropes present in her, but all in all, she was handled very well, and I have little to no complaints about her.

The Flower Ponies
Repeating "the horror! the horror!" seemed like it was too much of a "WE MADE A POPULAR HEART OF DARKNESS REFERENCE A LONG TIME AGO! WE'RE CULTURED!" at first, but when they flipped out about the broken flower and fainted again with similar reactions, it made me smile. It's something they literally ALWAYS DO. They're overexcited and overly dramatic. Ponyville Players Theater Troupe when?

The scene where Time Turner was flipping out about his fireworks (beautiful and expertly timed scene, by the way) and then grabbed Roseluck by the cheeks did raise some questions for me. Did he forget about the time he and Roseluck went on a sojourn into the woods together? Did he sit by her on purpose? What's going on here? Just a little bit of side speculation for me, but some reference as to why he was in the woods with her would have been nice, so that scene can be more than a "LOOK AT US! WE LIKE DOCTOR WHO! AREN'T WE SUCH NERDS XD"

Vinyl and Octavia
The thing this episode did right by with these two the MOST is that they had the two of them play off of each other's music instead of begrudgingly accepting one another. They had a real Lindsey Sterling thing going on, which was SUPER cool. This show IS about the magic of friendship, not the magic of "MY MUSIC IS BETTER THAN YOURS"

The scene with the wub wagon where they were picking everyone up was more or less unimpressive because it felt like they were trying REALLY hard to be as "epic" as possible, right up until the Gummy scene.

HOLY SHIT.

I think that's the absolute hardest I've EVER laughed watching this show. It was perfectly timed, perfectly funny, and perfectly clever. It hit the kind of humor I love SPOT. ON.

Steven Magnet
Yes! This fabulous fuckwad is back in the action. He was pretty great the entire time; I think he's the only character that got a flawless performance. His visual gags were great, his lines were hysterical and well placed, and he offered essential backstory very subtly. And I love how he's grown from Rarity's influence about a year ago in show time; he freely gives up his mustache as a token of friendship and in a display of magnificent generosity. This was a really sweet reference to the very first episodes, and I loved it.

Lyra and Bon Bon

Lyra remains mostly unchanged, and for that I am thankful. That "best friends" thing was forced, but I could see in their eyes that it was MUCH more. that certainly isn't the weak rational of a dying Lyrabon shipper ;_;

Bon Bon is the character that really annoyed me the most. That whole "secret agent" thing was introduced, and then... not explored. AT ALL. It was shown for about 20 seconds and then it skipped over her doing anything related to it. It was already risky business adding such a radical backstory to her; to add it, and then to waste it by not DOING anything with it is just annoying and damaging to the episode. If I HAD to change anything about this episode, it would be that. Very misplaced, and very lazy.

Also, Sweetie Drops is such a grody name. Makes me think of candy snot.

The actual wedding was... very feelsy, to be honest. It was a very wonderful look at everywhere the series has been and everything it has done. I love how they used Cranky as a way to bring back pretty much everyone; he had been going EVERYWHERE to try and find Matilda. They used established show canon to tie together their episode in a neat, wonderful way, and that's one of the smartest things this show has ever done. Even though I love it to bits,it has the habit of adding new things when old things could have easily sufficed.

And, this video explains the message Mayor Mare was trying to get across very well:

The scene with the Princesses was charming and giggle-inducing; I was really hoping they'd piggyback on Spike's gift and write their names on it after his, but oh well.

They did overplay the thing with Shining crying at big events. It could have been funny... but I'm not sure how. It just made him look like a big baby in the scene.

And let's not forget our arthropoda friend, the changeling. I know they were trying to make reference to EVERYTHING in the series, and at first I was annoyed that no one was flipping out about the changeling (except the foals), but... it actual does open some possibilities. The changeling was there, at the wedding, so he was a friend of Cranky's... how did they meet? What history does he have with that changeling? There are limitless possibilities for that, and I thank the show writers for handing us such a wonderful opportunity.

All in all, this episode was fantastic, even if there were choice parts of it that really dropped the ball. It was fun, hilarious more often then not, and really a great reflection on the series so far.

That image is beautiful.

And before you get pissy, I did not rank the episode after Appleoosa Horse Shit, it's off to the side because I don't fucking know and also Fimfic can't columns.

3145563 It's a very... full episode, to say the least. I don't blame you for being overwhelmed. My simple, childlike mind was easily able to process it though because it didn't have to spend all that time thinking about it that you silly adults with your evolved brains do.

well, to be perfectly honest, I couldn't process half the damn thing because the friend I was watching it with wouldn't shut up :V I'm gonna have to rewatch it at least twice before I post a "real" blog about it, and that's why I'm trying to avoid commenting on other people's blogs, and even my own.

I only liked it for the horse mask cameos.

JUST KIDDING IT MADE MY HEAD ESPLODE

I felt it was a mess but holy shit was it enjoyable.

But no nowacking cameo was sad rip the dream

I'm only worried about OctaScratch, actually. LyraBon is all but confirmed.

Also, princest confirmed.

3145822 dat hoofhold tho

ready for some sweet incest lesbian loving

That Bonbon agent scene made me giggle hard, I could only think of SCP Foundation. The motherfucking Gummy part, tho.

Best episode since S4 opener, imo.

I actually liked the Bon Bon being a secret agent thing, thought it was a nice wink towards the many names she's been called by fanon and canon alike. Also it inspired me to do an adventure story that I'm going to get to today. Pseudo-Kingsman-pseudo-RED-pseudo-Pacific Rim without mechs-pseudo kinda deal. Nihil sub sole novum.

Eh, it's was a good episode. Liked the Bob Bon bit, especially as here entire plan is to get lost in the crowd. And the Doctor Who referenced were funny to me. Especially since Tom Baker is my fav of the Doctors. Only thing I didn't like was Steve Magnet, entire back story and we don't know anything other than he is close to Cranky. Oh and Cranky is a tightwad with bits. Who knew?

I'm not sure if I love or hate this episode. I cringed just as much as I laughed watching it. It was obvious Lyra and BondBon were biting their tongues to avoid saying the words "with benefits" when talking about how such good friends they were. They totally bang each other.

3145531 Holy Fucking Shit: 40,000? :trixieshiftright:

With that said, I think this was the perfect MLP episode, despite its misfires. :rainbowhuh:

What do I mean by "perfect" in this case? :unsuresweetie:

It had everything that makes the show endearing and enjoyable in about 20 minutes (Except for a big baddy, although I think that's actually one of the show's drawbacks). :trixieshiftleft:

There are friendship problems, a monster of the week, whimsical and adorable characters with a spicing of cynicism, some nice world-building, solid animation and voice acting, a balance between adventure and slice-of-life, and some good humor.

As far as series canon goes it's one of the least productive episodes in the show's history, but in the realm of fanfiction this was the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. And ultimately helped spawn new life.

3146580 I wouldn't exactly call it the "perfect" episode in that way. It's very fanon heavy. Someone who doesn't participate in the fandom (or example, most of the target audience) would be lost as fuck going into this episode.

But you did get the special prize win, so I'll PM you about that.

Look at them all...they must now burn their neckbeards in shame and shall scatter their tribes to the four corners of the Earth. Look at them and laugh. For they are fat.

More fanservice than Girls Bravo
also holy fucking christ it's Steven Magnet

and Mayor Mare's ending speech really warmed my little cold black heart
