Actually, it's only about 302,189 words for both AHP and ROTF - and you don't really need to read the stuff before 7DSJ Book 1 (itself 150K total) if you don't want to. It's only for Book 2 you need to know what's gone down in my Hairy Problem stories, just for context purposes really.

Also, making 7DSJ book 2 more accessible to readers unfamiliar with AHP and its sequel was one of my objectives with the rewrite, so you could probably get away without reading 'em (but you still should because completionism's important!)
