State of the Author, december 2023

Here we are. Another year is almost over. The winter solstice is around the corner, along with any number of special holidays. It's a white Christmas in Oslo. The snow came relatively early here this year, falling in November and staying ever since, with every apparent intention to stick it out until spring. And I am sitting at home resting and relaxing, also, until spring.

The Marriage of Cadance Afterthoughts + 100 Follower Special · 5:23pm Apr 13th, 2015

There. As of last night, the story is concluded.

Not sure what to say, now that it's over. I wanted to write a story about divine psychology, something sweeping and cosmic in scale, and to take a deep look inside the mind of a character who doesn't often get to show much depth. What does it really mean to be the goddess of love? What would it do to you, and how would you cope with it?

I wanted to show her in every different circumstance: young and old, carefree and scheming, at her happiest and at her saddest, playful and somber, the raw and carnal side by side with the spiritual and serene. It turns out Cadance had lots of ideas for everything, and wouldn't stop presenting them to me until I reached the end.

There could have been more: in particular I would have liked to describe how Twilight Velvet and Night Light fell in love. But that demands more time to tell than there was room for in this story. Maybe some other time.

Personally, I love this story and I think it works really well. Every part of it could have been different, of course. Should it have been different? Who knows. Maybe posting just one chapter a night was a mistake. Maybe it would have made a bigger impact if I'd posted the whole story all at once. Maybe not. In any case, it's done now and it is what it is.

Thank you all for reading my story. It didn't have a huge readership, but you came back night after night, thoughtfully following Cadance through the ages as she struggled to keep it together. Thanks for that, guys, and even though the ending didn't work for everyone, I appreciated every comment. Thanks once again to Naughty_Ranko for prereading and giving excellent and interesting feedback to every scene.

In other news, delivered somewhat late, this story also pushed me above 100 followers :pinkiehappy: Celebration time! Wine! Song! Disco lights! ...okay, I don't actually have any of that stuff available right now, but hi guys, welcome and thanks, take a look around and see if anything catches your eye

ETA: I actually reached another little milestone as well. With the story finished, I've just cracked 200k words published on FiMFiction.

Time for me to take a break and think about what I'm going to do next, I think. So long guys, and see you around.

-Daedelean.

The mind of a god is not something easily conceived by we mortals, though a Greco-Romanesque god whose flaws are those of man writ large is a bit easier to work with than, say, an ineffable, omnibenevolent one. I'd say you did a great job with Cadance as pony Aphrodite.

Do you think you can do something similar for luna/nightmare moon?

Thanks. It was a weird piece of work and it was never going to work for everyone, but I'm ultimately very happy with it.

Well, it's much longer and Luna is not always in focus, but you can check out my story The Crown of Night, in which pre-Nightmare Luna is one of the main characters

That was a great story.

I quite enjoyed this story. Particularly the immortals with mortal failings aspect of things.

This was my first time reading a story this... psychological, for lack of a better word. This was an interesting take on Cadance, and I'm glad I took the time to read this. This may not mean much coming from a comedic writer, but this was definitely a very well-written story. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, but I still had a great time reading this story.

Have a follow.

Thanks, man, glad you liked it. If you fancy trying another psychological story you can check out Big Mac Goes to Therapy, which works with some of the same ideas as Cadance.
