Now that I'm reading it, I have the strong suspicion this is actually very similar to an idea I've long toyed with. If so, the Less Wrong folks won't be happy with it. We'll see.

Well, knowing you're a Less Wrong person changes the ending, and as such, I figured out how it was going to end.
