2522804 To be fair it's not like it's very intuitive, I only know it cause I love the movie Wargames.
I think the theory is that you cant go lower than 1 so they make that the most extreme, whereas you can always go higher with numbers. Though in that case there should be a DEFCON 0. (though maybe that is for post apocalyptic beyond the thunderdome cases)
We are now at DEFCON 4.
