Friendship is Card Games: Trixie and the Razzle-Dazzle Ruse

We return to the pony novels this week, and hopefully a better showing from the titular mare. Last time we saw Trixie in one of these, G. M. Berrow was channeling the fandom circa 2011 and making her and Gilda the designated antagonists of the piece. Let’s see what she’s up to this time.

Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

    Swan Song

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

Yet Another Rainbow Rocks Reaction · 6:49pm Sep 28th, 2014

Cutoff going up for spoiler prevention.

Well, that worked nicely. I now have about fifty card ideas and an excuse for a new creature type. Also, quite a bit to talk about.

Overall, it was pretty good. It feels like the main cast had to learn the same lesson as last time, but life lessons don't always take on the first go-around. The fractures were there at the beginning; it's just that the circumstances took a pickaxe to them.

On more specific notes:

Human Pinkie's skipping uses the same sound effect as pony Pinkie's pronking. Perfect.

"Even sang a song to Vice Principal Luna and I." Mind control ruins your grammar. Good to know.

I find it interesting how Sunset refers to her successor as "Princess Twilight." That could be genuine respect, still-ingrained court etiquette, or some combination thereof.

I really like Sunset's journal. It's basically magical quantum entanglement, which means that quantumancy is totally canon, which means that my headcanon on how Spike's message breath works may actually be valid!

The book from the show premiere seems to be a collection of folklore. Makes sense. Also, given how much he did over the years, I'm beginning to suspect that Star Swirl was actually a Time Lord. His beard was actually a symbiotic TARDIS. (Also, the sirens' apparent immortality never was explained. Maybe it was tied to their pendants?)

I do appreciate how Twilight's math-babble is accurate, though there are probably more than three spacial dimensions involved. Or perhaps it's just dimensions four through six. Also, how did she get the portal so quickly? Did she already have it on hoof? Does it just show up when the plot needs it?

Nopony else gets to go because of the legend rule. Works for me, though I do wonder if the others would have different outfits than their analogues.

I'm going to go with the "pubescent endocrine system messing with her head" explanation for Twilight's infatuation with human Flash. Sure, there might be something there, but a few hours of interaction does not a strong relationship make. I'm not opposed to the relationship on principle, but I do think it needs to be developed beyond "Twilight and this guy like each other because reasons" to be believable.

Okay, who did the multi-angle recording of Dash's transformation? Auto-cinematography on portable cameras always bugs me.

I do not like what they did with Twilight's arcane knowledge. She was assuming the same method would work after taking one of the most potent magical catalysts in either world out of the equation. I understand that this was an urgent matter, but I feel should've thought it through, or at least tested it.

Twilight and Sunset's late-night commiseration was a little ham-handed, but it was still a great character piece. Still, that Twilight, Princess of Friendship decides not to ask the other student of Celestia for help, the one with access to a journal full of her own arcane discoveries, feels a little forced. Granted, she'd be asking a former adversary, but still, it feels like that bit was just dragged out for drama. I suppose I can blame it on that darn teenage brain again.

Sergeant Rarity's Lonely Hearts Club Band is a fantastic thing that needs to happen. Likewise Fab Punk.

Would it have killed Rarity to interrupt the song to say, "Excuse me, someone appears to have attached magnets to my jacket"? Even under mind control, the principals were awfully accommodating.

Derp band is best band, and anyone who disagrees is objectively wrong. The only way it could've been better would be if Derpy played the theremin, but the saw definitely works. At least Pinkie made use of one.

Why is there an enormous trap door on that stage, and why were the Rainbooms practicing directly above it? Also, did Trixie seriously just leave them to die?

Vinyl's short foreshadowed how and why she'd be involved. That's actually kind of fantastic. Also, she's apparently the daughter of the ambassador to Cybertron.

I'm rather amused that "Fast, Fine, Fierce" predicted a few elements of the final fight, including the villain beating back magic just by shouting at it.

Sunset writing to Twilight is an excellent echo of what has been. Twilight has come into her own, the student becoming the master. Now she has her own pupil.

I quite liked the sequel hook. That is going to be interesting. Especially if they make use of the massive security leak that is the always-open portal.

Again, overall, I enjoyed the movie. There just some sticking points where I wanted to step in and knock a few heads together. Maybe it's time for a certain planeswalker's moderately triumphant return to that particular timeline...

Sir, you win the internet the undeniable prove of Vinyl Scratch being the daughter of Soundwave.

Need a link to this...Rainbow Rocks...

There needs to be a card called musical counterspell.

ARGH! While I greatly appreciate you not posting spoilers, this just makes me want to see Rainbow Rocks even more! YOUTUBE HERE I COME!

Q: Also, how did she get the portal so quickly?
A: She's a Spark, obviously.

Also, Lyra was there.
Also also, if Star Swirl is a Time Lord, I'm imagining him showing up in an alternate version, his beard making the TARDIS noises, and him playing the original Doctor Who theme song... Somehow... Because timey wimey stuff and stuff.
Also also also, TwilightceptionBWAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

2490694
That could explain why she never speaks: she has her father's voice.

2490946
One of the planned cards is Counterchorus.

2492602
I don't know. I like the idea that Cadence sent it over, especially if it involves the Crystal Express plowing through mountains in its haste to bring Twilight the mirror. Because anything that makes use of the giant crystal death train is awesome.
Besides, if anyone's a madgirl, it's human Vinyl. Her car seems like a perfect example of Spark-tech in the Information Age.

2492923
Yup. LyraBon confirmed. Or, at the very least, they're "cousins." :raritywink:
Star Swirl being one of the Equestrian Doctor's previous incarnations is on the edge of becoming my headcanon. It's kind of a fantastic idea.
And yes, human paranormal researcher Twilight was cool. She's what I meant when I mentioned "the sequel hook."

2493053 The idea of his beard being the TARDIS raises some interesting questions in terms of companions and the conversations they had.
Star Swirl: Hop into my beard and I'll take you on a magical ride through time and space.
Logical Reaction Pony: BAD TOUCH STRANGER DANGER!!!!!!

2493063
Yeah, that part would be complicated. Still, the beard being larger on the inside is the only explanation I have for this grandiose display of facial hair. Heck, that's probably how he banished the sirens. No spell necessary; just shove them in the beARDIS and timey-wimey them into another bit of probability space.

2493069 And now I have an idea for a story in which Twilight discovers Time Pony science and grows a beARDIS for herself.

2493096 And then the beARDIS turns into Pinkie Pie... Oh wait, that's been done already.

Things that I missed and really should have noticed:

Human Pinkie's skipping uses the same sound effect as pony Pinkie's pronking. Perfect.

:facehoof:

I also missed Sergeant Rarity, but the pronking sound is the unforgivable one, given that I'm looking for stuff like this.

I'm going to go with the "pubescent endocrine system messing with her head" explanation for Twilight's infatuation with human Flash. Sure, there might be something there, but a few hours of interaction does not a strong relationship make.

I'll go with that, or Jordan's theory that she's not used to the bizarre human sensation of mild but constant arousal, or both, and also that he's the first person to hold her hand right after she has hands. I can accept that yes, there's a mutual attraction and even that they might date if given the opportunity, but they never ARE: Twilight's visits have both been very brief and during times of potential global catastrophe. I did find myself wondering whether, if this had happened during Cheese's time at CHS, he would have been influenced by the Dazzlings or not. That's a particularly tough call to make, given Vice Principal Luna and Principal Celestia's quick succumbing to mind control, and it's also one of those things where (sorry!) I prefer my version better! I prefer the idea that Luna and Celestia are weakened human versions of themselves, that they might echo themselves as the Humane Five do, and maybe even that they're in touch, as in Bookish Delight's Matters of Principal. Would his dose of Pinkie's magic sort of immunize him? And that has nothing to do with his being her boyfriend or not, and everything to do with the magical transmission that took place when they were kids.

Especially if they make use of the massive security leak that is the always-open portal.

Oh, my gosh, yes, mirrors and portals everywhere, and so many chances to use them. I'm not convinced that there's not another way into the Mirrorverse that doesn't destroy two worlds. That was Starswirl's first prototype, after all, and the EG mirror hasn't blown anything up, though. And there also appears to be a portal from Maretropolis into the EG world. I keep wondering if the hints about active, functioning portals doesn't echo the ways in which they're trying to keep the franchise more consistent across platforms.

Not to mention that Pinkie seems fascinated by them. Sooner or later, a Pinkie is going to venture through a portal and the multiverse will explode (unless, of course, she's already done it.)

2496403
A lot to discuss here. I'll take it in chunks:

I also missed Sergeant Rarity, but the pronking sound is the unforgivable one, given that I'm looking for stuff like this.

Well, that's a bit of the magic of friendship. Many eyes make for plentiful observations.

I'll go with that, or Jordan's theory that she's not used to the bizarre human sensation of mild but constant arousal, or both, and also that he's the first person to hold her hand right after she has hands.

Could be a combination of all of the above. I actually quite like the idea of the hands being an erogenous zone for ponies-turned humans. It's a dramatically different structure with a lot of nerve endings crammed in. Of course, the ex-equine has to get over the whole bodily transmutation thing to actually enjoy that, but I imagine the contrast from hooves would be a marked one.

I did find myself wondering whether, if this had happened during Cheese's time at CHS, he would have been influenced by the Dazzlings or not.

I'm going to say no. All of the Hu-mane Five had spell resistance, after all, and it could be argued that Cheese is far more magical than, say, Applejack, even if he doesn't get horse ears from playing the accordion... or so I assume. :trixieshiftright:
Cheese would probably be really helpful during the events of Rainbow Rocks. He could be an outside perspective for the Rainbooms (though he might feel more than a little pressured to support Pinkie,) a voice of encouragement for Sunset, and a source of emotional damage control. That last part wouldn't be easy, but his magic is almost the direct opposite of the sirens', designed to proliferate positive energy.

I prefer the idea that Luna and Celestia are weakened human versions of themselves, that they might echo themselves as the Humane Five do, and maybe even that they're in touch, as in Bookish Delight's Matters of Principal.

It's certainly an intriguing idea, and one that I'd love to see Bookish, you, and others explore, but it's not one I hold to. I think the CHS principals are closer to how Celestia and Luna would have been, were they born mortal and in the modern era. They may be analogues to virtual goddesses, but I don't see them as anything too special.

I'm not convinced that there's not another way into the Mirrorverse that doesn't destroy two worlds. That was Starswirl's first prototype, after all, and the EG mirror hasn't blown anything up, though.

Yes, but the catastrophic entanglement was caused by Celestia using the mirror to enter the Mirrorverse on an infrequent basis for a millennium (or so I understand it.) The gate to the EG-verse has seen next to no use in comparison. The long-term effects have yet to be seen, but I can't imagine the Office of Parallel Timelines is happy about it.
(Mind you, the OPT probably could be helpful in entering the Mirrorverse; they're trained professionals. But comic-Celestia is pretty high on their shit list right now.)

And there also appears to be a portal from Maretropolis into the EG world.

Yes, assuming it's the EG world and not a humanized version of Maretropolis. I haven't read the comic, so I'm not sure whether that's made clear.

Not to mention that Pinkie seems fascinated by them. Sooner or later, a Pinkie is going to venture through a portal and the multiverse will explode (unless, of course, she's already done it.)

There's actually a story about that, though many of the Pinkies are almost unrecognizable as analogues of the Bearer of Laughter.

2496605 I think it's the EG world, considering that EG Dash is reading a comic book about it a few panels later.

Eternally open portal = SO many story ideas...on both sides. Seriously, all we need is EqG Pinkie to sneak over to FiM just to see what being a pony is like. You could get an entire episode or more out of that.
