TV Tropes? · 9:39pm Jul 4th, 2014
Hey everyone. This is going to be a bit different than my normal blog post. (Do I have a normal blog post?)
I don't know how many of you are following 8_Bit on this website, but he just recently put something up about something called a TV tropes page. Now, normally I'd just Google it, and find out what it is, but I figured I'd do something different here. So, I turn to you guys.
What the hell is a TV tropes page? And how does TV relate to fanfiction?
For the record, I am very well aware that this is likely something obvious, and it makes me look so oblivious that many of you now probably think that I live under a rock. This is simply not true.
...
Well, it's a very nice rock.
Anyway, please tell me in the comments why I'm an idiot who needs to get out more. Or... stay in more? How do you deal with internet stuff like that?
So, yeah. Also, assuming a tv tropes page is a good thing, (8_Bit seemed happy about it) should my story have one?
It's a good thing; it's the equivalent of enciclopedia on everything, and if you do get a page or mention, it means that someone has bothered to write up something about your work. It will drive up attention and focus to your work greatly.

Ah, so, a wikipedia of fictional stuff specifically? Interesting.
And anyone can write up one of these pages on anyone's work?
TV tropes is an evil wiki website. Aside from deserving a class A memetic warning, it will eat your time up until you read every single article.
It contains both pages on most fiction, and some nonfiction. On each page, there are links to "Trope" pages, which explain and give references to works that contain them.
Tropes are concepts that are found commonly in fiction. For example, Painting the Frost on Windows refers to entities of some sort being in charge of what is in real life natural weather phenomenon. Jack Frost being what is called "Trope Namer", being the source for that trope's name, and likely the first or best example of such. My Little Pony has that as an active part of itself, to the point where the Ever-free forest acting like a normal, earth forest, is considering terrifying and unnatural.
2257946 Indeed. A bit of a warning; it's very addictive, and you will, not can, find yourself wasting hours at the very least on it, clicking on new threads.
I have no clue as I am not a Trooper.
2257961 i could have used that advice two years ago. So many tropes to read......What games/movies/literacy/shows/cartoons/books fit what trope.....There are hundreds of them to read, my eyes are starting to hurt when someone mentions TV Tropes website.....
Anyway, i recommend our dear author that made this blog to check out what TV Tropes is. Just Google "TV Tropes my little pony" or follow THIS LINK INTO HELLISH PLACE
Hope you enjoy your visit in TV Tropes. I will be happy to receive your opinions on that wonderful (IT'S PURE HELL!!!) place. Please inform me if you have visited it
2258182 Well, I'm sorry don't have a time machine!
Yet....
2258209 no need to take offence. Besides, it's fun now to drag people into reading the beautiful (Hellish) tropes in TV Tropes website. Have you ever wanted to people to read something interesting (to fall into a trap darker than the existence before the big bang itself) ?
Warning: I went in as a virgin. Naive.
I woke up 3 hours in the future, having no idea where I've been.
2258221 Of course!
2258224 well, good for you. The place is wonderful (HELLISHLY EVIL) and you should visit it again soon. Please promote the site so that more people can enjoy (SUFFER!!) the pleasures (THE TERRORS) of TV Trope.

I've considered writing a Rip van Wrinkle parody, except I don't know what to write after a bearded man wakes up after reading the entirety of TvTropes by accident.
If you have a tvtropes article, it means you have fans devoted enough to vivisect your story for everything it's worth. I consider having a well-fleshed out tvtropes page the highest badge of honor for a fanfiction writer.
By the way, it's cheating if you make one for your own story.
Getting a tvtropes page is a good thing. But beware...

I use it to find books that deal with a particular genre, for example the TV trope page that deals with media that is told from a non human point while viewing humanity (through alien eyes I believe is the specific one) has a large list under it that details books, movies, fanfiction and so on. It's also a handy way to loose a few hours of your life.

Seriously, have you ever been on a days long wikiwalk?

Yeah, that'll happen.
TVTropes is a wiki-like website that breaks down common (Read: All) storytelling devices and conventions that are used in fiction, which are known as Tropes. It's basically like the Wikipedia of fictional plots. But it's very addictive (Narcotic levels of addicting), where you can start off on 'Accidental Marriage' and end up with 138 tabs open on pages such as 'Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking', 'Interrupted Declaration of Love', 'Big Stupid Doo Doo Head', and 'The Silent Bob' in no time at all.
I pulled all of those examples off of one page... Yeah.
2258457 No it's not! There's No Such Thing As Notability, so it doesn't count as Shameless Self Promotion.
