Winterovers enjoy a variety of job duties during their estimated 12 to 13 month deployment at the South Pole.

That sounds like a horror movie job.

Twilight Sparkle, Sunset Shimmer (NOT the EQG one, Sunset Shimmer from the show's universe), Moondancer, Dinky Hooves, Dr. Whooves and Petunia Paleo are on a paleontological expedition on Equus' South Pole. They find what they were looking for and bring it into their research station. But what they don't know is, that these aren't the remains of an animal that has gone extinct millions of years ago, but a very alive monster that has been banished under the ice by powerful ponies in ancient times, long before Equestria was founded.
The monster awakens and starts to go on a killing spree, in an attempt to escape the station and to unleash itself onto Equus, exhibiting powers and abilities that go far beyond the understanding of any pony living today.
Only these six high-profile scientists have a chance to stop it, with their combined knowledge and intellect. But will they succeed before all of them fall prey to this ancient evil?
