    Seashell: getting closer to print!

Here's where we are on the Seashell print book:
83 pages all told, including front matter and a preface. 75 of them so far are story. Anticipating about 10-20 more pages to be finished. Almost there!
Cover's done (for the hardcover edition dust-jacket, at least, will probably have to be redone for the paperback but whatever).

    Jinglemas 2023, done!

I wrote this thing for Penguifyer, and today is my assigned day to deliver the gift, so I guess this is when the story drops:

    TLost
Twilight, on her new wings, couldn't find her way around Cloudsdale. It may have left more of mark on her than she wants to admit. Written for Jinglemas 2023.

I'm pleased to be able to say progress is being made, although to temper the good news, it hasn't been entirely easy.

Seashell: The Book™: progress so far · 5:06am Nov 2nd, 2023

It's happening, my good pony people.

Seashell. It's coming back. In printed book form!

I've been working on it for a while now. There's been a lot of editing and rewrites and changes - it's becoming what I guess I'd characterize as a remake, the same essence as a story but refreshed in the how of its crafting. And it...well, it needed it, to be worth printing, in my eyes. Being almost ten years old, there's a lot I can do better now that I've developed further as a writer. But at the same time, it's been interesting to see how much I actually still really like just as it is. I think that's because when I was writing it, I was writing it from my heart, pouring out the story I saw there. I remember really enjoying writing it for that reason. I think a lot of that still shines through. I still want to keep those gems, so I have been; keeping the best from back then, while cutting away and fixing up and reshaping the rough parts that didn't quite land as well.

And you know what? I'm glad I decided to do this. In the rewriting, I'm finding myself enjoying it and writing from my heart once again, like I did the first time around, and finding a lot of myself coming through Sunburst's voice once again. This is in a way reminding me why I love writing, and for that, I'm very grateful to all of you who encouraged me to do this by expressing your support for Seashell as a print project. It means a lot to me. It really does.

The process has been one of laying it out in a book print format at the same time as I'm rewriting, which is a weird hybrid approach that I'm not sure is usually the one most authors would use, but it's working out for me pretty well. So far, I'm up to Excerpt 8 of the print book. That... actually only corresponds to the story through Excerpt 5 of the version here on FimFic, so, yeah, there's clearly been some restructuring and expansion.

Still doing a hardcover version first (that's the edition I'm working on now), with a paperback to follow.

And someday soon, I'm really looking forward to seeing that first proof copy, and finding out how it got all goofed up, and going back to fix everything, and getting another proof copy of the revisions, and then fixing whatever went wrong with that one, and...

Yeah. I know that sounds pessimistic, but it's not! Unironically, I'm actually looking forward to the adventure(s) that I'm sure print will bring. I'll see you there.
