hmm, I just realised we did Death by Newbery Medal, except with Spoiled as the dog
(Trope: Death by Newberry Medal.)
Samey and I worked on this for several months, in bits and spurts. Samey found the article Daughter from California Syndrome and asked how to write a story. I said, "I've always wanted to give Diamond Tiara a mule half-sister."
And so it began. Overall, we wanted to hit both drama and comedy beats, and tell a story about Diamond getting her heart ripped out, but we also wanted it to be a story where she has to grow, change, become a better person. Really, a gateway into adulthood. Not quite the Monomyth, but certainly some coming-of-age.
We also took great joy at kicking her while she was down; this made it more fulfilling when she got back up, of course. Silver Spoon and her utter lack of filters and inability to read the room, in particular, was a joy to write as a means to kick Diamond in the feels.
We would often just leave this in the middle of the story:
[Silver spoon says something autistic*]
[Diamond screams]
And then fill it in revision.
*: I scored a 160 the last time I took the RAADS-R, so I have A-word privileges. Also, we mostly wrote Silver Spoon's lines by me asking myself "What would I say IRL in this situation and later regret?"
We also have a shorthand for our collaborations: whenever we write a particularly funny/cursed line, we mark it "Banned from Offprint."
I wrote one line in the story that was so bad, I left it as a Gdoc comment to the line I actually inserted, and labeled this horrible line "Banned from Everywhere."
Samey, of course, put my too-horrible line in the story in place of the low-octane version. Feel free to guess in the comments which line it was.
Why is Randolph a retired mercenary ninja?
It’s sorta a Terry Pratchett reference. Also, the correct answer is “why not?” Perhaps it warrants a Young Randolph Chronicles story
If you've read past works from both of us, you can probably see the creators' fingerprints on different scenes. We hope you enjoyed this amalgam of our distinct insanities.
PAQ (potentially asked questions)
- What did Silver spoon do to Dinky? We're not sure, but the most credible rumor we heard is that it involved massage oil, the Pony Sutra, and heavy well-drilling equipment.
- Who the heck is Silverspeed, Silver Spoon's mom? There's a canon background pony with gray fur, silver mane, and purple eyes.
- Is Diamond Tiara straight or bi? Bi, but heavily leaned toward the straight end.
- What did Silver Spoon do with two tons of tea and five kirin foals? She roasted the foals, they roasted the leaves.
- What is wrong with you two? Quite a lot, really.
A few fun facts (possible spoilers below):
Since antibodies are inherited from the mother, Diamond may be onto something here.
I met a guy at a chess tournament who did exactly that. He was goddamn fast as well.
Welp! Might as well not ask my question anymore.

69 on the RAADS-R.

Obligatory 'nice' here.
150 myself, but like...yeah, duh. 😄
Fortunately I'm not prone to word vomit like Silver.
I am entirely in favor of this.
And yes, Silver is a very familiar experience. There but for a very determined mother raised on Southern etiquette go I.
It's a good story and it was my pleasure to read.
