She worked from home most of the time anyway, being forced to do so seemed like not that big of a deal. When the chance to help end the outbreak was presented, she went for it, and got back more than a footnote in history in return.

Come to think about it. Do we have Big Mac yet?
Ooooh, so close and yet so far from actually trying to dig into this little mystery.
It's curious how they've avoided noticing quirks like that. Wonder how many ponies have only narrowly missed much harsher personality crisis episodes as they questioned just why (on average) they've been mostly fine with being transformed in the first place, and where some compulsions (like using "anypony") even come from...

Or Troubleshoes.
In hindsight I can say that of course there would be a mathematical way of expressing magic given that there was a musical method of doing it, music is mathematics after all (look up Boethius' writings on music theory if you don't believe me, or look into what "music" study meant for university students in medieval Europe). I can see advantages to either system, so probably in practice both would be used. Keeping magic in mathematical form means that you can bring to bear the extremely powerful machinery of modern mathematics to analyze it and perhaps derive new spells, limitations on spells, and similar results in a somewhat mechanical way, whereas the musical method is probably more intuitive and easier to use to actually cast spells. I'm kind of surprised Twilight doesn't pick up on that, although I suppose she would need to be a mathematician or in a mathematics-adjacent field like physics or computer science for it to occur to her.

Given the resources at hoof, I don't think it's hard to see why the intuitive option won out.
That's... quite bold thing to tell someone, actually. But maybe Tia shouldn't tell Twi about her recent activity of such kind just yet? I don't recall them becoming this close.
Kinky.
