Humans, Slaves to most races on Equis, Their frail bodies and lack of magic or flight made them easy pickings for other races. But when an army from an unknown land appears. Will they be able to change the tide of history?
"Hmm very good work. We might have to send some men to check out the village, maybe ask the locals for a map of the area or directions to the nearest roman border if they are friendly and know where it is." Varian thinks to himself for a moment while looking over a list of the current forces he has at his disposal. "Have the 3rd legion prepare themselves to march off to this village. Cant be too careful and 5,500 legionnaires seems like plenty of soldiers to handle a small village. But in case have 200 cavalry go along with them. And tell the cavalry to map the area along the way, better maps equal better information. And information is better than any sword." Varian rants slowly looking towards the list of legions stationed in the base. Writing down the order on a piece of paper.
EXCUSE ME?!? 5,500 soldiers for just pretty much checking out a village?!?! That is very absurd you know Sure they are in unknown territory, but come on.... how big is this fort? If there is a legion with 5,500 men in it and some other legions and cavalry, the "fort" has to be massive... and they are going on a mission to get to know the village and it's surrounding areas. If i was a villager, i'd be extremely scared/intimidated. Around 2000-3000 soldiers seems more reasonable, but even then a small village would be very scared of a group that size.
I'm just saying this because i want to know the approximate amount of manpower and the size of the fort they have. If i could know this, then i could at least see some sense in the amount of soldiers that are being sent to "meet & greet the small village". Would sending that many soldiers hinder the forts effective defenses due to having half of the soldiers leave it? Or would it still be strong because there's about 15 000 - 25 000 melee/ranged infantry + cavalry forces around 1000 men and their horses that were transported to Equestria?
8591154 well, i don't require it right now if you are going to put the vague numbers in the next chapter. i can wait that long easily.
I just want to know the approximate numbers and stuff. So the time in which i learn those things can wait until the next chapter if you are going to put them there. Since i don't know many forts that have more a few thousand people in it, maybe some tens of thousands, AT MAX... now fortresses i do know since to me fortresses are large and can have numbers in the tens of thousands as a skeleton crew if they are especially large and often they'd have hundreds of thousands of people. But it all depends on the population count of the race/empire/country/etc.... some would say a fort is fully staffed at a few hundred people, some would say a few thousand, etc....
I'm baaack! And here are some mistakes. 1. "and one looked like a royal guard with flat sheets of metal armor. Only it was silvery not gold". Are you meaning a Lorica Segmentata? Because if I remember corectly they were yoused in the 1st century AD. And then only were worn from Legionaires. (I might be wrong because I am reanacting a legionaire but the group I am with is in the time of Augustus. 2. I have to agree. There mostly just only 1 Legion per Fort and these were split up to smaller forts. I would suggest a cohort or two 500 to 1000 man. And if you stick with the legion idea. Legions weren't lead by a single centurion! And there were more than one standard. Every cohort had its own Signum stanard. Also I tried ones marching in full equipment. You can bearly hear anything. A friend of mine was walking 2m before me and I to ask what he said. Also what happened to the Cornu of the Legions? There were at least 50 for each Cohort. In the fort were played the Tuba a long metal pipe. I still like this story and I belive everyone rants about the Roman abuse of slavery because it was a big part of theier society. And how ponies are living in Hoofton? if there are a milita of 7000 this land have to be huge.
8591773 Thanks for the feedback. Note, the fort the Romans occupy is a permanent one made of stone So is larger than the wooden temporary ones. This was so I could bring in more humans. 2: I was not aware that there were more than one eagle standard In a legion, I must have made the mistake of thinking it was one per legion instead of cohort. 3: you must remember not every soldier wore the same armor, some used hand me downs and higher ranking soldiers could afford better armor. While not common I believe at least a few soldiers might still have segmentada. I might be wrong I am not the most knowledgeable about the 3rd 4th ish century. 4: about the armor making noise I’m sure you can yell over the noise to at least pass along an order, of Not I’m sorry.
Not there was really just 1 aquilla per Legion. But there were other standard as well each Cohort has its own Signum a standard unique to them. as for the armor the Segementata wasn't better. It was just cheaper to produce but I agree wirh you there could be hand me down and remember there were 5500 legionaires in a huge columm. Also they didn't were backpags! They used furca a long cross. Here a link to a picture. https://i.pinimg.com/736x/74/0e/7c/740e7c8dfdb51a3b9855f58d71449725---day-roman
8591812 Thanks for the info. I said backpacks cause it’s easier to explain. I’m not trying to be super omega historically accurate injust want it to be in the ballpark. Cause who besides poeple who looked it up or are Roman history buffs would know that Romans didn’t use backpacks. Though that’s not an excuse not to use it.
8597433 i said legion since its 5000+ men, A cohort would have around 80-100 men (Sources vary and some think a couple were slaves or non combatants). If this does not answer the question please refrase it and quote the line in the story from where you mean.
8681120 fun fact i didnt now what to name her so i picked a random pony name genrator and ink showed up. 9159458 might not be cause im not writing it anymore. Not sure if i shoudl just cancell

Their romans. They arent exactly known for subtlety. Plus varian states
. I might have gone overboard with the numbers but i felt like Romans wouldn't leave it up to chance that they wont get ambushed on the way.
8591144
true, but can you at least give me some numbers? like how big the fort is? how many people came with the fort? at least some vague numbers?
8591151
Do you want to know out right, or should i put it in the next chapter?
This is getting good dont Let the romans lose!
8591155
id be pretty boring if they only won thought.
8591157
No! Romans are awesom but i see your point.
At one point you wrote pegasusus instead of pegasi. Good chapter slow pacing though.
8591154

It's better than no pacing...
Love the story and situation, keep up the great work
How will the Romans interact with Equestrien technologies letter ?
Steam-powered factors, Machines and Macig
Sorry for the grammar
8591459
Sorry still working on pacing.

Ypur right there.

Message me on email if you see any more of these inconsistencies please
This story has great promise. I read the old version, but I really look forward to seeing a Roman Legion kicking some pony tail.
Good sir you are wrong when it said the 3rd legion it should be cohort as that was the actual formation
This is good so far, keep it up
