(Boy, does that conjure some strange mental images . . . .)
Hey all. Guess I'm still alive. Haven't been feeling much inclination to doing much on the site, but I'm still reading almost nothing but pony fanfics (re-reading, mostly). I am actually working on the next entry of Grammar for Real People, and a while ago I made a lot of progress sprucing up my plans for Minoan Crisis, as well as preparing for a large project I may or may not have hinted at in the past. Here's hoping any of those actually bear fruit anytime soon.
So I decided today to post my Rainbow Dash flying speed findings on Reddit, and in doing so I noticed a really big, stupid mistake I made.
Remember how 28mph sounded really slow?
Well, it turns out I accidentally counted the time per lap as 11 seconds, but looking at the footage again it's more like 4. I have no idea how that happened, but I'm really surprised none of us caught it sooner.
Let's see, how much did I write?
...
About 16,500 words of Minoan Crisis, and 4,500 in short fiction and poetry for my Creative Writing class. Well, guess I know where my priorities are.
So 21,000 words all told, almost half of the NaNoWriMo goal of 50,000. And I was going to sit down and crank out a bunch of crap to buff my numbers, too, but it's too late and I forgot. Oh well. Maybe I should total up my count every month. This was kind of fun, and insightful too.
...Or maybe I'm just running myself into the ground.
(have you guys even see that drawing I did a month or two ago...?)
Anyway, I finished a second chapter. So to "celebrate", here's free access to a snippet of what I have in store for the world this fic takes place in.
...the wind and the rain never came.
To call the place beautiful, no one would choke,
Though hard on the hooves, they'd exclaim.
But high in those hills, past the rocks and the rubble,
So high that the clouds were below,
Lived two redneck clans that were nothing but trouble.
As you listen, you'll see that it's so.
Now the clan to the West, that thought it was best,
Wore the name Hooffield like shoes.
You know, some nights. Others I don't know because he's either out late working (all the freaking time), giggling with his girlfriend (all the other freaking times), or inexplicably not home. You know, regular roommate stuff.
Except that he's freaking Ponky.
I'll let the big-name people do the actual analyses of this episode. I'll just point things out and hope I get some discussion. It was fun for Griffonstone, hopefully it will be fun here, too.
Like world-building, for example. Not only did Griffons get another drop in the bucket for Best Species with their awesome tiger-striped and hawk-beaked delegate:
But we saw more pony designs, like this mare:
I... I think I'll live... but Crisis is officially departing from canon as of this episode. My gryphons (not griffons) are not going to be rewritten just to fit this whole Griffonstone thing. Sorry. Or "you're welcome," as the case may be.
Anyway, this is my favorite episode so far. At least for this season, it's really hard to compare new episodes with old ones, at least for me. So I'm going to do what I do best and ramble. Fair warning to you.
...of my life, not of any story you can read here. I left my university for the summer, and on a whim took a cross-country road trip with my roommate. So now I'm spending the weekend at his family's house in Aurora, Illinois before I fly the rest of the way home. It's not every day that you stay in a city named after yourself.
Just a little one. Not much of an obstacle, when you think about it.
I don't know how you could be reading this if you didn't notice already, but Minoan Crisis is finally up. Gosh I've been working on this thing for months. Late November, I think is when I first started an outlining doc.
Spending hours on top of hours filling in little rooftops in different colors and all in different perspectives shouldn't be part of something you do for a hobby, but that's what I've been doing for the past two weeks (I think... it's all kind of blurry). Oh sure, there was a sense of satisfaction when I finished drawing the city, but that doesn't change the fact that
.
Preach, girls.
So I'm assuming a lot of you are familiar with the World-Building Alliance, a group dedicated to expanding the universe of MLP, figuring out details from show evidence and gathering various authors' versions of the world outside Equestria, focusing on non-pony races.
If any of you actually pay attention to stuff I do (probably not), you might remember little mentions (like this and this) of a bigger story involving minotaurs that I was really excited to get started on. I'm still really excited for it, and it keeps looking better and better. Lily and Binary were both done really,
