I thought I understood the Hugos... · 7:51pm Apr 26th, 2016

But upon seeing my little pony on the potentials ballot this year, I was scratching my head.

I thought they were specifically for science-fiction fantasy stuff, and I guess MLP qualifies under fantasy, but has there ever been a kid's show nominated before?

I looked at everything else on the ballot and it feels very much adult-focused. Or young adult focused, as opposed to aimed at children.

Hugo nominations close tomorrow (Friday) evening · 3:09pm Mar 18th, 2021

The nominating period for the 2021 Hugo Awards, Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book, and Astounding Award for Best New Writer opened on January 25 and will remain open until 11:59 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT; UTC – 7) on March 19, 2021.

The 2021 Hugo Awards are for science fiction, fantasy, and maybe horror if it's by someone the SFF community likes like Neil Gaiman, published in 2020. I know, it's confusing.

The Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer · 12:47am Feb 3rd, 2019

The Hugo Awards are given each year to honor the best writing in fantasy, science fiction, or horror.  To quote from thehugoawards.org:

While the World Science Fiction Society sponsors the Hugos, they are not limited to sf. Works of fantasy or horror are eligible if the members of the Worldcon think they are eligible.

For many years, there's been a category of Best Fan Writer. To quote from the same web page,

Hugo nominations due Friday the 13th · 1:56am Mar 13th, 2020

A reminder that Hugo nominations are due tomorrow, Friday March 13th, and that, as far as I can tell, fan fiction is eligible for all fiction Hugos. Fan fiction, fan blogs, and other SFF-ish writing are eligible for the "Best Fan" Hugo. If you're eligible to make nominations, that means you're registered for Worldcon and you already know how to make nominations.

The Hugo Boss Question · 6:49pm Jan 12th, 2022

I wonder what Rarity would have to say on the topic of Hugo Boss' involvement with the Nazis in the 1930s, and how his company still thrives today. I thought about writing a one-shot about it, but I feel ill-equipped.

Cannot Sleep, Must Write... · 5:09am Jun 19th, 2016

I have not written anything in 48 hours and it is starting to affect me psychologically.

Many of you don't know this, but I performed a test last week. I finished one job last month and am transitioning to another hopefully very soon, but in the meantime I have all this free time, so i decided to write. For seven days straight

I wrote approximately 43,000 words
over 9 stories

The 2016 Hugo Finalists · 7:07pm Apr 28th, 2016

Well, the 2016 Hugo Award finalists have been announced. And ... I can't say the list is surprising. Good? I also can't say that. At this point, the only topic of the entire set that seems to have any relevancy at all to the real world is the category for film, which looks to be a four-way battle between Fury Road, The Martian, The Force Awakens, and Age of Ultron.

LOVE IS REAL · 3:43pm Nov 10th, 2019

Morning!

So, I'm like ... 7,000 words behind on my NaNoWriMo project, and I'm definitely in the 'arg this doesn't work everything is terrible' phase. Part of the problem is I don't give the characters enough time to snark and talk to each other, as dialogue is one of the few writing things I'm good at. Also, y'kno, motivations and stuff.
