The scene instantly came to a standstill at Silver Spoon's command. Apple Bloom and Diamond Tiara froze in place where they were, neither of them even twitching an eyelash.

Silver sighed and trotted over to Diamond's motionless form.

"This isn't right either," said Sweetie Belle.

"Oh, you think?" replied Silver scathingly. She frowned and her ears reddened. "Sorry. I didn't mean to snap. I just... I don't get it. Nothing we change is making any difference. I mean, look at this," she gestured Diamond's disdainful glower. The mare was caught right in the middle of surreptitiously spitting into Apple Bloom's tea. "They despise each other."

"That's not true," said Sweetie softly. "Feelings are never as straightforward as they look on the surface, especially romantic ones."

"Well, even if they don't hate each other, this still doesn't help us," said Silver. "They're never going to get together, which means Amethyst won't be born." A tear rolled out from her eye. "It feels like... it feels like destiny wants us to fail. I mean, what if it was supposed to be this way all along? What if Equestria was meant to be destroyed?"

"Then destiny can go buck itself," said Sweetie.

Silver looked surprised at this unexpected outburst, until she noticed that the gem on Sweetie Belle's necklace was glowing a faint peach color. "Oh. Hey, Scoots."

"Hey," said Scootaloo, speaking with Sweetie's body and voice. "C'mon, Silver, are you really giving up?"

"I'm just frustrated. We tried everything. Every possible set of parameters. Nothing worked."

"Look," said Scootaloo, examining Sweetie Belle's hooficure idly. "I don't know anything about temporal mechanics, but just hear me out. You're trying to mend a lifelong relationship with one quick fix. Even if you've got mastery over time and space, that's never gonna work."

Silver frowned. "Yes? I do believe that's what I just said."

"If we're gonna fix this thing, we gotta go deeper. When you fight a timberwolf, you don't just prune it. You go for the heart and hit it as hard as you can."

"Don't timberwolves reassemble themselves if you destroy them?"

"You know what I mean."

"I really don't," said Silver. "What are you suggesting?"

"I'm suggesting, trying to fix things now isn't gonna work," said Scootaloo, ruffling Apple Bloom's motionless mane. "You gotta take things back further, much further. AB and Diamond always had a thing for each other. Hay, I think it started before I even met her."

"That is not an option," said Silver. "The reason I'm pruning is to avoid damaging the timeline. The further back we go, the greater the chaos effects of any change we make."

"The timeline's already damaged. You said so yourself. The whole planet is going to be blown to dust," said Scootaloo. "At this point, wouldn't you rather risk it?"

Silver trembled. "You don't understand the kind of forces we're dealing with here."

"Try me."

"Destiny drives everything that we do. It makes us who we are. It gives us our cutie marks," said Silver. "It's literally the power of the gods. Throw chaos into that mix, and, well, I believe you've met Discord. Need I say more?"

"Hey, Discord's a fun guy!"

"Only when he's playing nice," said Silver. "Point is, destiny isn't a toy. If we aren't absolutely, 100% careful about the changes we make, the results could be disastrous. And the further back we go, the harder it is to make accurate changes. If you're talking about going back to our foalhoods, you might as well just reboot the universe and try again."

"That's exactly what I'm talking about," said Scootaloo. "Silver, I've already died once. It's not something I want to happen to any of my friends."

"Well, we all die eventually."

"Yeah, but you'll have lived a full, happy life. Right now, Equestria has no future for anyone. So I'll say it again: buck destiny. Let's fix this thing."

She paused, and a moment later, added. "I agree."

Silver glanced at Sweetie Belle's necklace, which had dimmed. "You do?"

"Yes," said Sweetie Belle. "I know what you're afraid of."

"You really don't."

"You're afraid that if we go back too far, you'll change your own destiny. You'll become that horrible bully again."

"I'm not afraid of that," Silver lied.

Sweetie Belle grasped Silver's hoof tenderly. "Let me just say this. If that did happen - if somehow, we changed things so that we were never friends - I still think it's the right thing to do. You have a good heart, Silvy. I don't think that's something destiny can alter. Because it's in you. It comes from you."

Silver squeezed her hoof back tightly. "Thanks."

Sweetie smiled. "We don't have to go back all the way. Computer, could you display the AB/DT timeline, please?"

A rectangular window of light flashed into existence beside the two, displaying a glowing horizontal line which was marked off at intervals. At some of these marks, smaller, fainter timelines branched off.

"There's a long period after leaving school where they never meet at all," noted Sweetie.

"Diamond was in Manehattan during that time," said Silver. "And Apple Bloom was working the farm."

"That doesn't mean they couldn't meet each other. Apple Bloom has family in Manehattan. She must have gone there at least once during those years."

"Yeah, but it's not like they planned to meet up or anything."

"Well, lets make that plan for them, then," said Sweetie. "These empty gaps give us a bit of a safety net. Any changes we make will be easier to reverse."

Silver nodded. "Okay. Although... we need to be careful. I'm in Manehattan as well for some of this time period, working for one of my father's firms. Computer, can you overlay the SS timeline onto this?"

A gray line became superimposed on the existing one. When it reached the time period they were looking at, it became somewhat disjointed and spotty.

"Oosh. That makes things a bit more difficult," said Sweetie Belle. "Were you just taking trains back and forth every week?"

"Not every week. I did a lot of travelling, but I was based in Manehattan." She pointed at a relatively clear patch on the timeline. "Let's try then."

Sweetie nodded. "July 1014 CE. Sounds good. At least it'll be warm."

Silver stood up straight. "Computer, end program. Prepare for a timejump to 1014-07-01 08:00:00, MST." She trotted out of the simulation room as the frozen holograms of Apple Bloom and Diamond Tiara shimmered into nothingness. "Ready?"

"Ready," said Sweetie Belle.

"Scoots?"

The gem on Sweetie's necklace lit up again. "Are you honestly asking me if I'm ready?" said Scootaloo, rolling Sweetie Belle's eyes. "I was ready like before you even walked in here."

"Just checking," said Silver. "Let's go buck destiny."

3885491 You said Sonic R so you must have owned a Saturn too. I LOVED Sonic 3D Blast for the Saturn, special stages were super fun. But holy hell it took from when my friend came over after school till past the time we're normally allowed to stay up on a school night (it was past 10pm) before I got to the last boss without level skips and getting all 7 chaos emeralds.

Casino pinball stage was fun. But yes, that game takes forever!
