Howdy, been a while since we've had a WWB update. Almost a year! But we have a new story coming out on Friday, and it's pretty damn good if I do say so myself (and I do!) It's called A Solid Foundation, and will focus on the Pie sisters.
So the last WWB story was thedarkprep's Secondhand Laughter, released back in July. This next story is following up by that, featuring Maud Pie returning home for Christmas break and finding things aren't as she left them when she went off to college. This will be another story by thedarkprep, and I think I'm going to talk about that, because I'm not sure people have fully gotten what's going on there.
WWB is not a fully open universe. Anyone is welcome to write in it, but those stories will either be noncanon or extended universe. Noncanon stories contradict something I have written or have planned, while extended universe stories don't contradict anything but are just not written by me or one of the other approved authors. These EU stories will never be important to understand the main plot, I won't reference back to them in any significant way, they're just fun ways to explore things I'm not touching.
But then there's those other approved authors. See, a while back I started working more collaboratively with others. It's actually my biggest advice to others: workshop your stories! As an extension of that, I dubbed Gowak my writing partner and gave xyr permission to write xir own WWB fics if xe wanted to. Xe hasn't actually taken me up on that, but xe can if xe wants to. But later, I gave the same permission to thedarkprep, and she has taken me up on that.
To be clear, these people help me shape my writing long before I ever put a word down in Docs. You've seen their influences already, whether you read their works or not. But because I collaborate so closely with them already, and because I admire and trust their work as writers, their WWB stories are fully canon. They'll shape the world in these fics, and I will directly reference back to them in my own stories. I feel like a lot of people think thedarkprep's stories are EU fics, when they're full on canon. My next EqG fic will heavily be influenced by these stories, featuring Trixie and Pinkie and likely to other Pie sisters continuing their stories from this one.
What I'm getting at is if you've ignored thedarkprep's stories because you thought they were just superflous to the overall story, I highly recommend changing that and giving them a shot. There's almost a week until A Solid Foundation comes out, so there's some time to read through the others if you're interested! They largely follow Trixie, starting with Under Her Spell which takes place during and after Rainbow Rocks and plants seeds of her take on Trixie and Pinkie. It's followed by The Opening Act which takes place after my main canon, featuring Trixie as she is after the effects of magic high school escapades and how that impacted her mental health. Finally, Secondhand Laughter fully explores the nature of Trixie and Pinkie's relationship and will be what shapes my future writing of these characters the most.
These are ultimately side stories still, but they have as much weight as my own side stories Up in the Air or Coda, both of which shape things characters and are (or will be) heavily called back to in main stories. I hope y'all will give these stories a chance and, if you haven't, a read. I didn't write them but they're all very special to me.

Clearly what we need is fic anarchism where EVERYTHING written by ANYONE is fully canon and if there are contradictions readers must simply DEAL with it
