January 2022 "Mockingbirb's Opinionated Flashfic Award" (MOFA) Results, and How To Enter February's Contest · 1:04am Jan 28th, 2022

The January 2022 contest prompt was especially dear to my heart: "Break the Rules!" with an optional challenge of "Write a story that also breaks at least one 'rule' about how to write. Preferably, write a story that isn't made worse by breaking the rule, but instead uses its freedom to good effect."

I've been happy to see so many strong stories, and I'm glad I don't have to try to rank them all in order or something. Thank you, contestants, for making my job of picking favorites so very difficult.

As usual, this "Opinionated" award expresses my own opinion, not the outcome of a large focus group or a flawless measure of all objective artistic quality (as if that last was possible?)

January 2022 MOFA Results

First Place

ReedHoarse for "Who Cares?"

I just liked this story best because I found it, for me personally, the most pleasant to read.

A little spoilery, maybe: ReedHoarse, your writing of the close viewpoint third person pov really did a good job of helping me believe and feel Twilight's emotional state...and built suspense about what was bothering her so much.

A little more spoilery: The final one-word reveal was delightful, not merely an efficient use of your word quota.

ReedHoarse wrote a very good story that didn't seem to get twisted at all out of shape by the word limit, themes, or "optional challenge." (If anything, the story seemed to use those constraints to become even better than some hypothetical story that ReedHoarse didn't write.)

Honorable Mention

I never promised to have a second place or anything else, but I can hardly let this story go without mention.

anotheraccount's story, "A matter of perspective," was both a success and a glorious failure.

The story failed in the sense that its prose worked so well, the rule breaking was easy to miss. Sorry, anotheraccount, you failed by succeeding, or something like that.

Dear Reader, I suggest you go read the story yourself, once or twice, and see if you notice the broken rule yourself.

I missed it on the first read for sure, and probably longer than that.

I thought another participant summed up the situation pretty well:

I must be missing something. If it's too subtle for Fluttershy to see, then why would it be so obvious to everyone else? He also claimed that it would help her. but I don't understand how it is. Or what rule is being broken. The writing's pretty good, but I just don't understand a lot about it.

The answer is here.

Please don't nag, Mr. Dragon. The winner has days yet to decide.

That is to say, the winner of Loganberry's Flashfic 150 contest has days to decide, since the MOFA operates jointly with Loganberry's event.

Hey, thanks!
