about half an hour ago a scary person who said he was our landlord's brother and owns the house came to yell at us. he offered us our month's rent to get out overnight or he said he was going to call the police. then he said he was leaving and would be back in an hour.
insofar as we can tell, even without a written tenancy agreement, we still have some kind of rights. that being said, we're terrified, having a panic attack, and have no idea what we're going to do if we're kicked out. we have been searching for places endlessly, but no one has replied to our emails.
we are recording everything that happens from now on and will post audio/video if it becomes pertinent. we are very scared and wish we had someone to hug.
edit: to everyone saying to phone the police, it seems like he is already having them come by, but we are also phoning them tomorrow morning to ask for advice
Landlords (and those associated) are absolute scum. I don't know if you live in the US, but the federal eviction ban is still going until (at least) Jan 31.
Call a lawyer, call the landlord, repeatedly. Ask whats going on, why this is happening, etc. You have to keep calm and grit your teeth. Flying off the handle will make things worse. Breathe.
If he gave you no reason other than “you gotta leave” then you don’t have to listen.

Call the police
Don't know where you are but in Kentucky (might be the same for most of the USA) if you have been living someplace for 30 days, even without a written agreement they would need to go to court and get an eviction notice that would give you I think a month to find a new place and move before they could have the police force you out. Always a good idea to verify though.
Edit: This was the case before the pandemic eviction ban, not sure how that changes things.

The landlord need a written notice of eviction with a reasonable time limit for them to legally evict you. In this case, and as stated by others... given its unusual circumstances, I'd call the police.

Yeah but it's only some states and it's not really enforced as well as it should be and landlords are going out of their way to find any loopholes they can to get around it. I think one jackass landlord literally removed the doors and windows from a house to make it unlivable and unsafe as a way to force the tenets out.
Contact your landlord or manager as well as the police and to be on the safe side get yourself legal representative a lawyer that will know and could find out what is going on you have rights and for what I can tell from what you said sounds like someone's trying to scam you hence the reason why I said contact your landlord if you have that information.

If you are in the US look up your relevant landlord tenant act. Additionally, get copies of utility bills and rent payments handy. If you can prove residence, it becomes a civil matter instead of legal ‘they’re squatters’ complaint.
Additionally, unless random jerkwad is the legally authorized representative of your landlord (via your lease or written modification of lease with advance notice) they can go pound sand as they have no standing to demand anything. Let alone outside of emergencies, most states demand a 24 hour written notice before a landlord can enter the property. Said lease is also a binding contract for the landlord. Give it a very thorough read.
If it continues and the above is met, feel free to file a restraining order for harassment. Note, you’ll need to write down every time he attempts to make contact for this. Video is possible, but it depends if you are a one or two party state for legal reasons.
