Wonder Woman 1984 is pretty good EXCEPT FOR... · 11:30pm Dec 30th, 2020

[SPOILERS TO FOLLOW]

So I just got done watching Wonder Woman 1984. Actually it was more a Christmas present for my mother. She's a bit of a Wonder Woman fan, so taking her out to see it was the family's gift to her.

Initial thoughts? For the most part I liked it. Actually I think I enjoyed this one more than I did the original. Probably has something to do with it's lighter tone compared to the former's grim and gritty WW1 environment. I think I liked the film's villain Maxwell Lord best of all. He's quite obviously meant to be a parody of 1980's Donald Trump, but he's got just the right amount of sympatheticness and maniacal deviousness. I also liked how the conflict is resolved by Diana showing him the consequences of his actions and what they're doing to the world. I liked that. It's a far cry from the days of the infamous Zod neck snap.

However, I do have one big issue with the film: Diana's wish essentially brings back Steve Trevor in the body of another man, and it's really awkward when you think about it, even more so because the film never really addresses it. I really think it would have been better if the wishing stone thingies had just spontaneously popped him in. I mean, it makes things spontaneously happen later in the movie's climax, why not with Steve?

Other than that and a few other minor gripes, I liked it. 3/5. Not perfect, but it was a fun little end to the year.

And hey, at least Mom liked it, so mission accomplished.

What did you think of Cheetah?

I haven't seen the film yet, but I'm interested nonetheless. The first film was definitely one of the best movies I ever watched, I'll tell you that.

Interestingly enough, the Wonder Woman films were actually the first films of the DCEU I've been planning to start with following the fact that they're prequels to every other film. The same with the next Wonder Woman film, if Warner Bros. plans to make it a prequel to the other films too that is.

Yeah, I heard about that plot twist, and I was kind of like, "Um, what?" :rainbowderp:

There was a comment on YouTube that put it pretty damn bluntly. "Congratulations, you made Wonder Woman into a rapist."

....Yeah, that kinda sums it up pretty well. Congrats, you turned Diana into Bonkers Betty. This is not good for her character as she is supposed to embody feminism.

5425121
Agreed on all accounts. Someone really, *really* should have thought this through a lot more. Or said, "Is this REALLY our best foot forward?" (Nice reference btw.)

5425121
Sorry, but I'm gonna have to contest your choice of terms. "Bonkers Betty" would've wished for every male on the planet to die except for Kooky Clark. This is a writing oversight. It would've worked fine if it had just spontaneously popped him out of nowhere.

The worst part is, given Maxwell's powers is that there could have been so many ways to avoid that implication entirely.

5425126
It didn't even have anything to do with Maxwell, because she'd made her wish before then. It could've just popped him out of thin air.

It's really a pity, because I liked the rest of the film but now I feel I can't because that's going to be hung over it's head for all eternity.

5425126
Yeah... seriously, this was just not a good approach at all. :fluttershyouch:

5425133
There's another... frankly bad implication we need to address. Cheetah, given she's somehow framed as a bad guy for kicking the ass of the guy who tried assaulting her and had tried in the past.

5425136
Yeah, that too. I'm really not a fan of what I've heard about how this movie portrayed Barbara Minerva.

Our hero everyone. She raped an innocent man who had zero control of his mind, state, or body.

Am I correct on that statement?

But still, Jade, I am honestly glad you enjoyed it. At the very least, you did have fun

For me, the film was good, not as good as the first one, but not horrendous as a lot of people are framing it as

Tho yeah, this film has some really, REALLY shady implications, especially in terms of the guy Steve possesed, he had no idea of what was going on, doesn't help that when Diana and Steve are shown in bed, the scene is put in a comedic light despite of what was easly noticeable

Maxwell was the best thing about the film, i nearly cried when he was calling out to his son once Diana reasoned with him about his actions, he sounded genuienly worried and overall, was a well written and sympatethic antagonist

Barbara..........has issues, the film shows her kicking the guy that nearly assaulted her as a sign towards villany, and once she becomes Cheetah, she looks like a less creepy version of the cats from CATS, doesn't help the lightning in the final fight doesn't give her any favors

Oh yeah, Max was the best thing about this movie by far.
