Behind the making of "Try" · 4:39pm Oct 26th, 2020

Hello, every pony. Today no interview, no story promotion but rather something different. Granted I often don't go into "Behind the scenes" kind of thing, but with Try, I really felt like I should. Like you all deserve to know why the emotions were so strong within the piece.

Let's start our tale with the simple fact, I love to write, but I also enjoy challenging myself so I joined Quills and Sofas Speedwriting as a way to improve my writing. Granted, I didn't go in with the mindset of wanting to win, I just wanted to see if I could even do it, and then found that I really enjoyed writing within a set time limit. So for a long time, I always placed last in the voting, and it was getting discouraging like I wasn't good enough. Over time I did start to do better in voting, but I have never placed in any of the Speedwrites hosted by them. And before I wrote Try, I had an emotional breakdown. I cried so hard.
"Writing has always been my strength, if I can't even write a good story, why Try at all?

This was the mindset I had when I wrote Try.
Often emotions can be hard to describe, difficult to handle, but if you simply supress how you feel, it's going to come out in the wrong way. You could probably tell I've had plenty of experience with this. So when I wrote Try, my only thought was I'm going to Try, because I don't know what else I can do.

I want to say thank you to all the readers that read Try, every pony who has upvoted it or favorited it, because if nothing else, I'm glad one of my stories succeeded in something. Being an emotionally driven piece that has touched the hearts of actual miltary ponies. They approached me and expressed how much my story impacted them, and at the end of the day, that makes me happy. Makes me want to Try again.

Okay, I'm done rambling now. I love you all. <3

This was interesting, thank you for sharing. I don't have much to say that's constructive beyond that I really liked the story, but I always enjoy reading behind the scenes blogs and notes!

i'm sorry that your writing journey has been so discouraging at times, and i wish that you did not have to feel that pain. but i am glad that after going through that, you continued to write, and wrote this story. it's not surprising to me that actual military ponies felt touched by your piece, and each one of those moments is a beautiful thing you have given to the world. no matter what, you should always be proud of that.

we all find our own reasons to write, and i hope that as long as writing is meaningful and good for you, that you continue to do it, and be happy as well
