What's cleverpun Up To? · 7:52am Oct 10th, 2020

Y'all may notice that, aside from some scattered blog posts, I haven't been doing much on FIMfic lately. And there's a good reason for that.

Most of my time lately has been focused on watching my niece. I'm still unemployed due to the pandemic, and so I've been trying to help out my family in lieu of anything productive. Then, I've been consuming a bunch of entertainment in order to stave off madness a bit longer. Been watching a lot of shows and playing a lot of games. Binged She-Ra, The Dragon Prince, Amphibia... Got a My Anime List account finally. Bought Them's Fightin' Herds and quickly realized how bad I am. Been spending an unhealthy amount of time following news cycles, watching the clustertruck my country has become...

But that's besides the point. Point is, I've been investing all my creative energy into my novel. Well, novels, but it's hard to count the dropped ones. I am proud to say that my current novel is now at 13,000 words (if you round up a tiny bit). To-date I've never finished a novel. The longest project I ever finished is here, on this site. The Conquer Trilogy only comes in at 22k words, however, barely a novella.

Even writing this blog post was delayed constantly, because I actively decided to work on my novel instead. I even delayed my reading journal series, despite recently finishing The Starless Sea. Even now, I'm writing this partly for myself, to help me recognize the progress I've made on said novel.

I don't know what the future holds, but I hope that someday life will return to a semblance of normalcy. And until then, I want something good to come out of this horrible pandemic.

Thanks for listening. Wherever you are, whatever is going on, I hope you are staying safe and sane out there.

Good to hear your doing well, minus the job part.

5374916 Thanks. Compared to what some are going through, I've been relatively lucky.

Best of luck out there. Here's hoping you keep up the momentum with the novel!

well heck :O keep on keepin' on!

My creative energy has been going towards... uhhhh...

Yeah, I haven't published horse words on FiMFic since April, and that was an expanded draft of a flashfic I'd written in January. So I haven't written any horse words post-Covid that have gone beyond the Writeoff Association site. And I haven't had any of my original fiction professionally published yet, BUT I'LL SELL A STORY I SWEAR.

Maybe another anthology collaboration is in order?

5374948 Thanks, I hope so too. A large part of my momentum has been thanks to an editor group. Fortunately we've still been meeting over Skype during the pandemic.

5374976 Thanks. Likewise!

(Although given your constant output of quality content, that doesn't seem to be an issue for you.)

5375135 I collected a fair share of rejection letters a few years back, when I was on a short story kick. (Justifiably so: all those stories were bad.) But after shifting to novels I haven't submitted anything anywhere.

I did have that brief burst of motivation for a second collab. But something about my structuring and—more damaging—my timing prevented as many people from being interested in it. Maybe someday.

If you want to try a collab, however, I'll be happy to provide any assistance I can. :raritystarry:

Them's Fightin' Herds is fun! After putting 100+ hours into it (playing online, not practising) I'm still only intermediate, and win online about as much as I lose. But at least now I understand what I did wrong. And I stopped caring about winning as much as I used to.

Message me if you want to practice playing as or against Velvet. Although seeing how active and helpful the community is, you can probably find plenty of practice buddies or instructors if you wish.

5375460 I initially started training as Velvet because Rarity is best pony. After a few hours of the basics, however, I'm beginning to suspect she doesn't fit my playstyle?

In other fighting games I'm halfway adequate at, I don't generally play dedicated projectile characters. More rushdown or hybrid

But if/when I ever revisit it, I'll definitely take you up on that offer, haha.

The character archetypes are: Velvet - zoner, Tianhuo - rushdown, Oleander - hybrid/all-rounder, Arizona - bruiser/close combat, Pom - puppeteer, Paprika - "WTF?!"

I started with Velvet because I just liked the character so much. Never really cared for Rarity though. I didn't really know what to expect gameplay-wise, but now I dig it.

I play Velvet as a pure zoner. I've never even bothered learning combos. High-level play is more balanced, with a mix of projectiles and combos from neutral: https://youtu.be/xpqJmkri3T0?t=4378
