    an update

Hi all. I hope everyone is doing well. I've been taking an extended break from FimFiction lately. Had some undesirable interactions with some users. That coupled with some of my creative frustrations just makes logging on... kind of unpleasant? If I do log on, it's usually to try and catch up with the fics I'm reading and then I quickly log off. I'm just feeling drained with the MLP fanfic

It was my birthday yesterday! I'd meant to post the day of, but honestly, I was so tired and busy I just didn't have much time or energy to sit at my computer. Wanna hear a funny story or two, plus see the new playlist I made for Sassaflash? Get it after the jump!

    ponies fix everything

New chapter for What They Hope to Find is out! I talk about what's next after the jump, but before that, a quick anecdote:

Last night, my family was having trouble finding something to watch together. My nine-year-old son didn't have any ideas, but he pretty much shot down every suggestion we had. Eventually, out of frustration and half-serious, I say, "Let's just watch ponies."

    Jinglemas! And Rarijack!

I'm participating in this year's Jinglemas! It's a cute fic exchange that happens every year. I requested a rare pair ship, three guesses which. :twilightsheepish: Today is the last day to join, so if you want in on it, be sure to read over the rules and PM Shakespearicles!

An Audio Reading, A Music Playlist (and some She-Ra geeking!) · 10:32pm Nov 16th, 2019

Eerie Lantern and the Not-So-Dead Haunting Chapter 2 audio reading, part 1.

Apparently, I don't have a video editor on this computer, so I haven't found a way to upload to YouTube yet. Google Drive is the only option for now.

More after the jump.

When I write, I often read the work to myself, just to hear if it sounds right. Sometimes, I'll even go so far as to record myself reading the story dramatically. I find doing this is less helpful for editing, and more for nailing dialogue and overall tone. When I'm reading, it's harder to gauge that. When I hear a recording of a reading, I can more accurately judge if something worked or not.

Usually I just delete these readings, either because I find the idea of anyone else hearing it mortifying, or because I'm too lazy to get the audio to a share-able quality.

This is a reading for Eerie Lantern, Chapter 2. I realize this is kind of odd, to skip a chapter... But again, I hadn't originally intended on sharing this with anyone. I was also uncertain if anyone would care for more, so I didn't even finish the chapter. Still, this reading is almost thirty minutes long. I had to do several sessions to finish it, then go back a bunch to re-record parts I thought sucked. I tried to clean up and level out the audio. I believe I got it to a point where you could listen with headphones and not wince, and over speakers without being unable to hear quieter portions.

It's not perfect. My impersonation of a country accent is at the mercy of your opinion. I also have trouble hitting my P's, D's, aaaaand W's? My mouth gets mushier towards the end.

I find readings fun because then those little tone changes I always imagined when writing can come to life. I enjoy reading my own work aloud-- I used to read my original writing to my husband all the time. I just never invested in learning how to do proper audio recordings. If you guys like this, lemme know. I can try to do more, maybe for my other fics too.

In other news, I was inspired by Noelle Stevenson's amazing She-Ra playlists to make a playlist for Eerie Lantern. If you haven't heard the She-Ra playlists... just do so. Catra's is spot on with bratty defiance, sickening longing, and dark angst. Scorpia's though.... phew! Hits the heart hard. It's like the ultimate breakup playlist, lol.

Anyway, so here's the playlist I made. There's some of the usual suspects you'd expect (Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, etc.) given gloomy Moonlight and tortured Eerie, but it's got some of the romanticism you'd find with Scarlet (Karen Elson, Builders and the Butchers), and of course, the bopping energy to Scooby-Doo to with Sunshine Smiles-- 90s psychobilly and 80s alt-pop (Horrorpops, Koffin Kats, and Oingo Boingo) because at the end of the day this story is still supposed to be humorous.

I'm still mooning over the fact that Stevenson made She-Ra playlists! And not "writing music" playlists, but "this is who my characters are" playlists. It makes me feel less goofy for doing that for my stuff.

I freaking love She-Ra! Have you seen the season 4 finale?!

OMG YES!

I really love how Scorpia finally ended up with the princesses. Also how Double Trouble read the shit out of Catra. She was destroyed.

By this point I thought Catra was beyond redemption, but now that she's with Glimmer in Horde Prime's ship, she's in a position to reset the hell she created for herself and everyone else.

Dude, I don't even know if she can reset it! I don't know if it's even possible to save them. That Armada is pretty big and Adora can't change into She-Ra anymore, remember? Her sword is gone! But then I do remember the third to last episode before when Razz told Mara that the sword doesn't make She-Ra, but that she was magic or something.

Dude... What if Adora learns magic in the next season?!!!/

Really appreciating the spoiler formatting in the comments. I've been waiting for an opportunity to binge on S4. I suspect it might well come during one night this week. I'm looking forward to it, though, whenever it happens.

Story/character playlists have always been a subject of interest to me. I think it's neat how we can let songs and music shape our words. I don't make playlists myself, but I do tend to have a single track for each story, which I play before I start writing, and again whenever I return to it from a break. I find it really helps with consistent framing of tone and emotion, or whatever else I need to focus on.

Like many teens, I was feverish with making awesome playlists for me and my friends to listen to. But when I got older, me and my bestie would exchange "theme" playlists, then challenge the other to guess what the theme actually was. It was fun!

Season 4 is probably one of the best seasons, IMO! I really hope you enjoy it.

Well, Catra did some pretty quick thinking in convincing Horde Prime not to destroy their planet. She scratched her way to the top in Hordak's empire, she's surely clever enough to figure out a way to pull strings with Horde Prime-- not as anything important in his eyes, mind you, but she's lived in oppressive regimes before and found a way to survive. With her ruthless guile and Glimmer's... uh... determination? They'll figure something out. Even if it's messy.

Yeah, Adora is gonna have to learn to use her powers without the sword. Maybe Razz could show her? Or even Shadow Weaver! If there's anyone to teach Adora magic, it'd be ol' Dark n' Conniving.

Whee, repeating cycles of trauma!

I feel like something similar is going to happen. Damn, we have to wait!
