To clarify: This is one of those ideas I thought about, but I won't write. Anyone is free to take it.
When the series finale came out, I seriously considered doing this one. What if Sunset tried to go back, but on a meta level, the fact that the series ended, meant that there was _nothing_ to go back to?
Of course there are many ways to take this. My presentation here is basically an idea for a sort of troll-fic. Sunset goes beyond the realm of her universal constraints and finds the truth that Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck already experienced before:
They are made up. And upon realizing this, she ceases to exist as the Equestria Girls series also reaches its finale.
Now, take this into a different genre.
The obvious choice would be drama or horror, right? The existential drama of realizing that not only you were created and that your perceived understanding of the mechanics of your world are flawed, but also that your ultimate fate is to just... cease. You can have a lot of angst and touching moments with this, ending with them fading away, maybe with tears in their eyes to tug at "teh feelz" of the readers.
You can also escalate it to the next level of story-telling duchebaggery that rips your heart out:
Challenging our perceptions of what is sad and not, we could turn this into an adventure! In a way, this could be handled like "The Neverending Story" where the Nothing, representing that weird quirk of humanity to deny your dreams and abandon fantasy and wishful thinking for the harsh reality and cynicism of the "real" world is something that is all consuming.
So much so that despair settles into the hearts of everyone involved.
What will Sunset do to keep the girls alive? Realizing she's a fictitious character, she needs to reach out. She needs to help bring Equestria back and help the girls keep on going.
The Meta level is high on this one, and would probably not fly for Fimfic given overlord knighty's the site's rules about Meta stories. But you could make it work with some caveats. What I'd like to write if I could?
Sunset discovering fics of her world, and the others. The good. The bad. The ugly.
In a way, deducing that there is not dim, final darkness in the end, as long as people remember them in their hearts. That their adventures will continue, and that even though things end, they live on in our hearts and stories.
So, what do you guys think?
I approve, it would also be interesting to see if their geodes and such started to stop working as another driving force of the story. Or maybe just as the reason she tried to go back
I think that this type of Meta should be allowed, I'd definitely check it out!

also when the uncle funcle are you going to write more Queen and CountryI say do it. We loved these characters from start to finish. They will never die out and will rain in our hearts. Their journey continues just as much as us. Neverending
Dude, you've done a crossover with The League of Sweetie Belles. This kind of metafiction is definitely permitted. And I'd love to see what you do with it, especially if Sunset could somehow win.
Or..OOOOR...We could go so meta with it that her attempt to save everyone results in Season 10 and beyond happening in the comics thus being the reason for that since season 10 is confirmed to be happening much like season 4 of Avatar and 5 of Korra since those 2 take place immediately after the show canonically and are fully canon. Especially since they answered the questions the show never did that everyone hoped would be like Zuko's mom's actual fate.
I really like this idea.
"Why, whatever do you mean, Sunset Shimmer?" Principal Celestia stepped up beside her and looked out into the void that the artifact had created instead of the expected portal to Equestria. "You must remember, although I am not your Princess Celestia, I'm still older than you, and know a basic rule to the world that all children must learn before they progress. If you do not find what you seek, you must expand your vision."
One long-fingered hand brushed against the hairs on the back of Sunset's clenched fist, and with the gentlest of touches, Celestia moved the artifact in a larger spiral, and then larger still as the void in front of them opened to reveal...
Not one silver thread stretching into the ebon abyss, but thousands upon thousands of them, looping and spiraling, each filled with the brilliant glow of an alternative world, and each still expanding out into the distance. They branched and joined, twisting in ways that mere human eyes could not comprehend, and blurred in her vision as the tears welled up.
"You see, my young student," said Celestia. "Your world was merely the beginning of a thread, not an end."
That ponies are dethpicable?

FoME, you could argue this is what EqG Screwball's job is in the Oversaturated-verse.
That could be a neat team-up.
Sunset, on a small chunk of ground, watching her world fade into nothingness.
From behind her:
"This story has ended. Did you think no one was reading it?"
(Oversaturated!Screwball is standing there, in front of yet another color of swirly portal.)
Sunset turns, sees her.
"I liked your story, it was one of the better ones. I can take you to others, if you want."
(They go)
This is the first story-fragment I've ever written. Damn this is hard. I have no idea how you do it, you awesome people, you!
Well, she could try writing fanfiction about them, to create fiction for them to live in.

Oh that sounds good! I particularly like the idea of a Looney Tunes take on it, tho I'd likely read most any angle.
It also reminds me of an idea I had for a MLP / Duck Dodgers crossover. (And if anyone would like to write that as a commission, hit me up.)

Funny story: I had already halfway decided that unprotected sex with Discord is what saved Fluttershy from the slow death she was inherently condemned to by being a mortal pony. Still inadvertently, granted.
