A JD Review: MLP Season 9 Episode 22 - "Growing Up is Hard to Do" · 6:46pm Sep 29th, 2019

The one where the CMC had one more episode in them.

And they got even cuter. How is that even feasible?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOkay. Looks like the Cutie Mark Crusaders had one more pulse of life left in them before the finale, and what a... surprising way to see these characters off. Honestly, I just saw this episode as acknowledging that the voice actresses for the CMC have gotten older, and allowing them to speak how they would now. Regardless, we find the CMC wanting to go to the fair, but not having a chaperone to guide them and keep them safe. They then engage in the dark arts to become older, we get a lovely musical number, and yadda yadda they learn being younger is for the best and being old sucks.

Honestly, this was the most relatable lesson.

I really enjoyed this one. We already had a send off for the CMC earlier on, but this felt like a little cherry on top. Just some harmless fun and to show what our favorite CMC look like when they'll eventually hit the horrors of puberty. Also, I find it hilarious and sad that Scootaloo's wings remained the same size (Still waiting for that flying episode).

Loved this one! 9/10! What were your thoughts?

Welp, Some things like the wings will never change. Well, at least not in canon. But I agree. I always wanted to see them older, and we got it!

I think Sweetie Belle looks the best as a grownup out of the three, but seeing as her sister is Rarity that should be a no-brainer. I have seen a lot of people draw attention to the fact that Scootaloo's wings are still small even as an adult. Although this may be a birth defect and possibly a sign that she can't fly I feel like nearly everyone forget that Bulk Biceps has tiny wings too, and he can fly just fine.

this was a much better send off episode then the one with Scootaloo's not caring parents. but if Im gonna be honest, I woulda liked a more darker ending where the CMC got stuck staying as adults and missed out on the rest of their childhoods, kinda like that story about the kid who gets a ball and string and everytime he pulls some of the string out, he jumps ahead in life, but he can never put the string back in and soon finds himself standing at his wifes grave, an old man. its really a fucked up idea for ponies, but idk, Im weird

It was a good episode, but I do think Last Crusade would have been the better last CMC episode. Still it was nice to see them all grow up and I did like the moral on how age doesn't equal wisdom. I also liked the other moral they put in where just because someone's an adult they don't always know what's best.

Maybe I’m used to how they look as fillies, but I think grown up CMC look kind of weird.

Next episode is the last before the big finale. Really fun and entertaining episode definitely in my top ten of the season. Maybe even top 5.

I too was disappointed about Scootaloo's wings. No spoilers please, but I was so hoping she would get to fly in canon before the series ends.

I'm a little surprised about Sweetie Belle. I always thought a grown Sweetie would be the most beautiful mare ever and have every stallion and colt floating off the ground at the site of her, but they didn't seem to pay her much attention, if any.

I thought that this was a good episode. Though I think this episode should've happened early on like in season 2 3, or maybe 4 and not in the final season!:flutterrage: It would've been great that we never get to see Scootaloo's parents and have Rainbow Dash adopt her (either in the show or in fanfics). There's great stories where that happens. Sorry if I went dark there.

Sorry about the emoji, but I've seen all of the episodes of this season and it upsetted and saddened me, especially the finale!:flutterrage: :raritydespair: i'll get more into it once the finale airs. Sorry for the additional emojis.

For me this was a rather fun episode that touch on a subject we can all relate to: The desire to grow up, but also the dreadful reality. Outside the series, we knew the actresses behind our favorite little fillies were obviously not the same kids they used to be and one has to wonder how it would be if they could voice the characters as their ages. Even though they were told multiple times of all the dangers that could happen and how they aren't experienced enough to be adults, they still went for it anyway when they stumbled on a flower that grants wishes (Well, least they didn't steal from Zecora this time). Then again there are just some things that won't change even as their older (As it's clear no matter what Scootaloo is never going to have the wingspan to fly... Sad but true). While this wasn't a huge story-driven episode, it was still a fun episode to watch from start to finish.

Though it's funny, they talked to most of the Mane Six members about being their chaperones, but they didn't think to ask Pinkie Pie. Though you'd wonder if the excuse would be,

"You remember the LAST time Pinkie Pie chaperoned for you?"

I liked it. It was one last CMC outing before the end. I just wish they'd focused more on Scootaloo's wings. Wasted subplot right there.

Well, it has been shown that Pegasi can't fly without their magic, so maybe Bulk has enough magic to fly despite his small wing size while Scootaloo doesn't.

Though we do get to see her fly in her dreams, which is nice. Sad, but nice.

Hey guys , review time !
Before I start , I want to say that from this episode and on , I didn't see any of them in advance so my reviews will be raw and not much thought , well , even less than usually at least .

So first of all , it might be because I got spoiled because of reddit but the second I saw them staying in the room with the flower , I knew what 99% of the episode would be about , and that's probably a first , not that the episode was bad but more obvious of a plot and you'd die ...

Also , it's nice to see (well , hear in that case) the change of voice in the CMCs but I feel like it was kind of random , it may just be me but I found out that they switched between the young and adult voices at some times .

Third thing is , the double-morale of the episode ("You don't want to be an adult in a snap of fingers because you will still be you , only in another body" and "adults have way more rights than kids but it's not always for the better") while good , feels way over pushed , they even have a whole musical number for that !

And last , FOR GOD SAKE GET SCOOTALOO WOKING WINGS ! We waited 9 seasons for her still not to be able to fly ! and I am pretty sure that was the last or before-last episode before the finale episodes so that means we won't ever see her flying ...

Now , for the a little mood-raiser : The Cuteness Ladder !
9001/10 I don't even need to explain why because it's bloody obvious.

Overall , this episode was good and I'll definitly watch it again , but the morales are so pushed on you and the plot so obvious that the "rewatchability" is very low , making this episode boring only after a few watches . This gets the episode a noice 17/20 !

!semi-spoilers!
I just checked and this is the before-last episode of the series , meaning that we won't get a flying Scootaloo , ever . Rest in ravioli , chicken ! (unless they get her flying in the finale which I doubt.)

5130084 It was so precious! :pinkiesad2:

5130085 Very true! Didn't think about Bulk.

5130092 A part of me was thinking they might go that route when I was first watching this. :twilightoops:

5130095 Oh, boy. We're almost to the end. :fluttershysad:

5130101 I'm holding out hope for Scoots! :scootangel:

5130120 Seriously, they should've at least recognized Pinkie.

5130131 Yes, exactly!

5130206 So much cuteness! :rainbowkiss:

What do you think?

Definitely a better way to do the message they put in that crap episode "The Cart Before the Ponies."

Perfect song for the CMC.

5130750 I think we all need to forget that episode.

My first thought of seeing them grown...... Rip Scoots seem like she'll never be able to fly unless she's like Bulk

They look really good as adults, I gotta admit.
