Between Dark And Dusk S9E13 Review · 4:00pm Jun 22nd, 2019
Time for another sisters episode! Must like Sunset, Starlight, and Dakka, we can never have enough!
First, how the hell did Gail Simone happen? I don't mind at all if this was the result, but still.
Anyway this was a fun episode, love the sisterly dynamic between Celestia and Luna, and they gave us lots of fun moments. And we got a SISTERS SONG, love it!
However, I did not enjoy this as much as A Royal Problem. The novelty of seeing the two in such a light hasn't worn off, especially since this goes further with showing them just as sisters and not putting on airs for anypony or having to do royal stuff. But I feel the conflict of A Royal Problem was more interesting and handled better. This episode had a lot more laugh-out-loud moments, but Royal Problem had stronger story tying things together.
Where this episode really didn't work was the B plot. Twilight and the Mane Six having to handle some palace duties is great, but they picked a really strange event for them to have to handle, and there was no drama in it. Stuff happened, they had a problem, they fixed it. This would have worked better if we didn't see them for the episode and then the sisters come back and find the castle in chaos, or find everything superficially in order but around the corners and behind the pillars, etc, we see the evidence of what happened. Alternatively, if you wanna play this plotline seriously, it should be its own episode, now more than ever if the group is expected to take over full-time in the near future.
Still, overall a great episode with lots of silly zany sister antics.
Yeah, this episode has the same problem as "A Royal Problem" in that it seems like it's afraid that audiences don't wanna see just a royal sisters episode even though it's the final season. But the B plot ends up undermining what they're supposed to be building up to, and Twilight of all ponies is the one who wants to do things all by herself despite twice being on the receiving end of offering advice and being rejected?
Agreed on dropping the B plot. It just fails to work on every level, especially when the opening scene consists of Twilight delegating.
Still, the bits with the diarchs were great. A wealth of characterization for the both of them.
Not perfect but enjoyable episode loved the song and it even featured an appearance by Capper which was a surprise. At least we still have the special next week before the Hiatus starts proper.
What "sisterly dynamic"? You mean the two most powerful ponies in Equestria acting like gigantic imbeciles?

This is new behavior?

Relatively speaking. They weren't always like this. :|

I’m not so sure about that. Season one Celestia wasn’t very defined herself, just other characters’ perception of her and season 2 Luna was more for jokes (heck, her role in ACW was just a few gags). A lot of the stuff the fandom credits Celestia for planning out could’ve been just good luck or a spur of the moment thing. Plus, we also had ACW which was a poor showing on both of them. To me it seems like the writers decided to go with that interpretation after having to write the sisters out of so much.
