The Legend of Mare-Do-Well will no longer ride on.

    Hello everyone.

I don't know if there are still people here who remember me or not, and frankly, I am not faring well in my life.

Part due to the COVID outbreak, part due to being unemployed thanks to aforementioned outbreak and part due to drama in my family and personal relationships.

    Well, it's done.

Before anyone panics, this doesn't refer to me finally giving up and placing my story under "dead fic".

    Update

My impetus towards the next chapter was severely crippled since my last post. I had a real rough 5 months at work what with so much written assignments piled on my lap...by the time I was finished, I didn't even want to go near a word processor...trust me, the next chapter is coming...just need to shake off the 5 months of word processor stress and I'll be back.

    hang in there, my friends.

    Second Musings/Hints at Future

    Greetings fellow MDW fans.

As you are aware, I have finally began writing again. As I explained in my last blog post a long time ago, I placed the story on hiatus due to both troubles in RL and a crippling writer's block.

Hey everybody, remember me? That author of that story where Pinkie ended up becoming Mare-Do-Well for real and then simply just let it "go" after saying that it wasn't dead?

You're all probably wondering why I supposed allowed the Adventures of Mare-Do-Well to "become a dead fic", right?

Sigh....Well I could give many different kinds of excuses and I even made up a silly little chapter with me interacting with "Pinkie" but here's the real truth:

I don't want my "fanon" clashing with canon.

Now some of you may think that's what being "fan fiction" is. Making up your own ideas, creating "what-if?" situations and all that. Heck, I even did it by making Pinkie less silly and slightly more serious and going with one of the series's most controversial episodes as becoming a real "superhero".

But in the end I don't want my ideas to clash with something that canon would make obsolete. What caused all this to happen? "Too Many Pinkie Pies" way back in Season 3.

You see, the original end of the chapter with Caballus was that the mutated Gummy actually kills him by eating him. Instead of being crushed to death, Gummy would have ended up dying himself due to Caballus having taken precautions against his ultimate creation by having hidden in his coat several powerful toxins in capsule form that would have been digested if swallowed by the mutant gator. So originally Gummy would have been poisoned to death and Caballus would be gone.

But...Caballus never really died....because that was actually a CLONE of him. Apparently, he was such a brilliant scientist and geneticist that he created several clones of himself which would work towards his goal of evolution. But where I was stuck was how to make it "plausible" that he could clone himself. I could never find something good enough to use so I went with that stupid idea of him escaping. And ironically, along comes that particular episode and the Mirror Pool... A good canon reason slipped by my fingers.

Then suddenly many episodes came that took ideas I wanted to use. Time travel to times when the villains reign supreme. Getting sucked into a magical Daring Do book (mixing both the Daring Do and Power Ponies ideas of magic stories). Rarity opening stores in Canterlot and Manehatten. A former student of Celestia getting even with Twilight who was also working with my "Griffon Syndicate". The Smooze appearing. So many stories which the series ending up using one way or another. Sure Twilight Alicorn, the Cutie Map and other things were never in my mind but the fact remains: Canon destroyed a lot of my fanon ideas.

So I began to doubt myself. "What will happen when canon would make something I make fanon obselete?" I asked myself several times. Sure, some writers don't care if canon destroys their made-up worlds...but I'm somewhat obstinate. For example many here have made up their own "Apple Family Parents", "RD becoming Wonderbolt before canon" and "Scootaloo origins from an orphan to a latch-key fillly with a horrible family". But not me. After my ideas went bust and then seeing canon destroy what would have been future ideas, I then decided on a personal vow: I would continue and even "remake" the story when the series known as Friendship is Magic is really over.

That way I can make my fanon without canon no longer making it obsolete. Yes, it sounds stupid and completely idiotic but thankfully
the series will soon be over. Plus, that means a lot of canon will be incorporated into the story. Of course, Twilight will remain unicorn (for now) and Golden Oaks will still be there. But with no more official stories to destroy whatever fanon I make, I can finally make my own world "in peace".

Yes, I'm sure many of my old fans are probably moving on to other things or just abandoned me, but rest assured. Once FiM is concluded this year, I will bring Pinkie-Do-Well out of retirement and my story will be better than ever.

I only hope I am forgiven by those who thought I would return and failed to do so. I will be back. PINKIE. PROMISE.

Interesting decision.

I'm glad it is isn’t dead

Not easy for me to make. Would you believe one of my ideas ended up being "Rainbow Rocks" but with ponies and real "sirens" (which would be more like hippogryphs with horse front bodies but bird back bodies and wings rather than canon ones that also add beaks and taloned forelegs)? That stung when that movie came out...

Stuff like that made me feel even worse.

Not dead. Just on hiatus until FiM is finally truly finished so my ideas don't clash with canon since there won't be any more "official canon" to clash with.

You're forgiven, because there is nothing to forgive. You had your reasons and they are good ones. I'm more glad that you'll continue one day and that means I get more chapters to live read in the channel.

I'm just glad it's coming back.

I am glad its coming back

I still tracked the story after all these years, a reboot won't hurt. Just to see the story get a proper ending.
(Granted, where the original had stopped at was still pretty good stopping point.)

Would be cool to see if some of your future ideas from Second Musings/Hints at Future blog.

By the way, how much of the comics were you planning on implementing into the story?

I have a request if you are going to go about rewriting the fic to suit modern canon.

Keep a copy of the old version of the fic for posterity purposes if you'll please. I always like to keep an archive of what once was when the fandom was young and the doors were yet open for the imagination to run wild before those holes were filled as the show progress. Not that I mind too much about how the show has progressed, but it would be nice to see what kind of ideas you had when deviating from the original material and making such speculations of what could be. There's just something that seems to sap away at the magic of discovery once the show itself fills in the holes that our idle minds question, leading to such doors being closed forevermore and never to be opened or explored again with the liberty granted from the absence of such canon material.

In essence, I would like to preserve at least a small fragment of what once was if possible for others to see. Though I can understand in part your desire to abide by the canon material presented int he show, I do think of it to be a little silly considering the contradictory nature of fanfiction in general. By it's very nature, fanfiction is inherently a deviation from the canon material no matter how you slice it. To be honest I do find it rather odd you decided to write such a fanfiction in the first place if you feel so strongly about being canon compliant. Seems it would have been better to wait until the show ended rather than wasting your efforts on material you consider worthless in the grand scheme of things due to its nature of contradicting the material that has since popped up in the canon source. Since much of the point of what makes fanfiction interesting is to see how a writer may deviate from the source material in interesting ways that may or may not contradict the source material, it seems somewhat self defeating that you started the fic the way you did when you had such concerns in the first place. At least, assuming you did when you started writing. If not, I suppose that could be forgiven since your views may have changed since then.

Still, I do find it a tad irritating that you have such concerns now considering you have already deviated so much from what the show has since developed into. Why bother with the effort if you are just going to rewrite it anyway to conform the standard set by canon? Why not take the contradictory nature of the fic and run with it see how it develops into its own thing and stand out among the rest? To make it distinct as its own entity without needed to worry about every little detail that may or may not be jossed by the show? Fanfiction is a medium that idealy is supposed to be a relaxing endeavor for the writer, not something to be fussed over in the manner you seem to worry about. Of course it doesn't mean that you cannot be worried about the quality of the work itself, but itagain it seems silly to worry about keeping to canon when you started in during the show's development. By the very nature of your work and that of the show, you would have both diverged into different directions that would inevitably contradict one another. Which itself isn't a bad thing in the slightest, provided you take the contradiction to a logical conclusion that keeps to the spirit, if not the letter of what the show has been throughout its existence.

Then again, I suppose our philosophies on this matter do diverge. Your priorities may still stand to be different even after reading this comment that has ballooned in length. I suppose I just would like to see at least one writer on this site stick to their guns and persist in what they originally had in mind for their work and not worry so much about sticking to the letter of whatever the canon source material may have since developed into as one work diverges further and further from what has since been created. Hence why I write here, even if it may be to little effort. For that my apologies in taking up your time. Just know that one reader does appreciate the deviations your work may have taken, since in my opinion it adds spice and flare to it that the canon show cannot or will not address due to the nature of the medium and for other understandable reasons.

In any case, I wish you luck regardless of whatever direction you take. Just learn the lessons you take from this and keep it for future reference if you decide to hop on the bandwagon for the next show to be. Good luck then.
