    Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

    We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

    Swan Song

    No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

    Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

    Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

    Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

    Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

    Conflicted Crossroads

    I have an interesting dilemma with an upcoming story, and thus I turn to the Fimfic public (or that portion of it that sees these blogs) for its wisdom.

MythrilMoth offered an interesting writing exercise: Compose a Smash Ultimate character reveal trailer. Since it also doubles as a game design exercise, I was naturally intrigued, especially after just having written something for a Smash-themed contest. Let's see where this goes...

Fade in. The camera proceeds down a sepia, pixellated hallway lined with abstractly patterned stained-glass windows. Ominious digitized organ music plays as it approaches a figure in shadow. Å crescendo...

And a musical shift as Sans reveals himself. He's not even 3D; it's just his Undertale overworld sprite.

* hey.

He's so lazy, he can't even be bothered to actually voice-act his dialogue. It's just text boxes. He holds up an envelope with a familiar seal.

* so, smash bros., huh?

* i know a lot of people were expecting me.

* and a few people thought I was already there.

* those people really need to...

He winks.

* mind their own busi-ness.

Rimshot. Papyrus's shocked face appears in miniature at the bottom of the text box, shouting "OH MY GOD!"

* hey, just a theory, right?

Sans shuts his eyes. Best not to think about how a skeleton does that.

* facing off against nintendo's finest...

The music shifts again, to the song that plays when everything has gone horribly wrong...

* but...

... only to cut to silence before it can really get going.

* i'm gonna have to decline.

Sans shrugs.

* see, i have this medical condition.

* it's called "1 hp-itis"

* real tragic, i know.

The entire castle shakes. Music begins swelling anew. Sans's grin grows even wider.

* so i asked a friend to take over for me.

The camera shifts to the left just in time to see a fish woman crash through the window spear first, in full, glorious 3D.

UNDYNE
dives in!

Typical character montage ensues, showcasing several of Undyne's specials and how her smash attacks have extra reach when she charges them, her magic spear extending further. At one point, she's lying prone on the ground as a Villager looks at her, then takes a bottle of water for himself. It ends with her Final Smash, transforming into Undyne the Undying and bombarding that Villager with dozens, if not hundreds of green energy spears.

Playstyle

Undyne hits hard, but works best when she can keep her foes at a distance. Even in her armored skins, she's a bit of a lightweight, and recovery can be a risky proposition. Despite her reckless bluster, she's still the captain of Asgore's royal guard, so her moves allow for both significant tactical flexibility and major style points. As noted above, her ground smash attacks have longer range the more she charges them. She has a Marth-like hitbox on her normal attacks and side B, with her spear's head dealing more damage. Undyne can also swim for somewhat longer than average.

Specials

Neutral B: Spear Launch. Undyne summons and fires one or more magical spears. This move can be charged; holding B summons more and more spears, to a maximum of five. However, the charge can't be stored. While you can press B quickly to shoot a single spear straight ahead, you can use the Control Stick while charging to adjust your aim.

Side B: Charging Thrust. Your basic chargeable lunge move, as with Luigi or Little Mac.

Up B: Diving Strike. Similar to Incineroar's Cross Chop, though you can use the Control Stick at the apex of Undyne's jump to control her descent angle.

Down B: Boulder Suplex. Just because she can. Behaves similarly to a throw; once Undyne's hefted the rock, you can use the Control Stick to throw it forward, slam it backward, or toss it to the ground to produce a small explosion of rubble.

Final Smash: Undying Assault

When Undyne activates her Final Smash, she throws her main spear forward. If it hits any opponents, it triggers a cinematic attack where she transforms into Undyne the Undying and performs the spear barrage described above.

Costumes

Most of Undyne's costumes comes in armored and unarmored variations. All forego her helmet

Standard
Alphys (Yellow skin, lighter yellow hair, lab coat white armor/tank top)
Papyrus (White skin, black hair, red armor/tank top)
Undying (Darker palette, different armor design, no tank top variant)
Deltarune (Police uniform, no eyepatch)

Stage: Mount Ebott

Hey, every new challenger comes with one. :raritywink:

This stage transitions between Snowdin, Waterfall, and Hotland, with different platform layouts and hazards in each. Between towns, the battle continues on the fast travel boat. Don't get left behind!

Ok, I would have been sufficiently hyped by this.

One question: what about Monster Kid?

You really had me going there for a second. Well played.

You forgot something very important.
Taunt 1: Does the “DBZ Power-Up Pose,” as shown here,static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goku_powerup.jpg and roars to the heavens “Anime is real!” (Or possibly the classic “NGAAAAAAAH!!!”)
Taunt 2: Slams the haft of her spear against the floor as an array of additional spears fan out behind her before disappearing.
Taunt 3: Rests her spear on her shoulder while flexing with her free hand, saying “Let’s go, punk!”

Also, her grab should involve trapping her opponent with a green heart.

Yep, that's about what I think it would be, too, though I made my design before we found out that Final Smashes were all going to be cutscenes.

Character: Undyne
Costumes: Full Armour, Helmet off, tanktop, date outfit (various colours)
Game: Undertale
A attacks: Spear jabs
Smash Attacks: Heavier jabs with increased knockback.
Grab: Impale on spear, shake it for damage
Techniques:
-Neutral B: Charge to throw
-Side B: Throw into the air, breaks into little spears after a short distance
-Up B: Rise into the air spear first, shedding water
-Down B: Stab the ground, another spear rises up a distance away. If it hits, the opponent is frozen in place for a couple seconds.
Final Smash: Undyne the Undying; becomes immune to damage and launching, increased damage from attack, random laser eye.
Special: Long reach from spear

i'm not sure whether this is ruined or made better by the fact that i can only imagine sans' voice as dan howell

Goddammit, I was literally going to post this exact character.

They can be part of one of Undyne's victory animations.

Zennistrad wrote a version closer to the character, but I think I wrote one closer to the spirit of Undertale as whole. :derpytongue2:

Undyne can also swim for somewhat longer than average.

Is swimming a mechanic in Smash?

On stages with large bodies of water, like the Wind Waker-inspired Pirate Ship. All characters are able to swim for a little while before sinking to the depths (and thus, out of bounds.) The more damaged you are, the less time you have before you go under. A few characters, like Charizard, Sonic, and Inklings, actually take a small amount of damage over time while swimming.

That is an extremely Toby Fox intro. :rainbowlaugh:
